Iganga-Mayuge Health Demographic Surveillance Site (IMHDSS) is a research platform established by Makerere University School of Public Health in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet-Sweden and in partnership with the Districts of Iganga and Mayuge . The site started in 2004 and its field operations commenced in March 2005. HDSS initially concentrated on core health and demographic surveillance focusing on the registration of births, deaths and migrations. Research in agriculture, technology, medicine and social sciences was planned to be gradually phased in as the site was growing out of infancy. In the same year, the site became an active member of an international umbrella organization of HDSS sites INDEPTH network (www.indepth-network.org). since its inception, about 30 PhD students have utilized the site for their research studies and over 50 Master's students. IMHDSS is managed by Makerere University Centre for Health and Population Research (MUCHAP) governed by Board of Directors, the high policy making body.
