WHEN A WOMAN BLEEDS, A FAMILY BLEEDS
In some traditional interpretations of the Acholi concept of a “good wife,” a woman is expected to endure almost anything in the name of submission.
She is expected to remain silent even when she is hurting, carry the responsibilities of the home, endure whatever comes from her in-laws, and sometimes even lose herself for the happiness of her husband and family.
But is silence in the face of pain really submission?
Today, many women are carrying deep pain within their marriages. From the conversations I have had with women, especially in groups, it is clear that something has gone wrong.
My heart bleeds for our land, and for the future of our children.
But perhaps we also need to look backwards.
Think about the home you grew up in.
How did your parents relate to each other?
How were disagreements handled?
Did you feel heard, loved and valued?
What did your childhood teach you about marriage, love, respect and family?
The families we grow up in shape us in ways we sometimes don't realise. Some of us are unknowingly repeating what we experienced, while others are carrying wounds from childhood that have never been healed.
And this is why rebuilding our families must begin with acknowledging that something has gone wrong.
Empowering women is important. It gives women choices, dignity and independence. But empowerment alone cannot rebuild broken families.
We need both men and women to rise and take responsibility for rebuilding our families and our communities.
Just as Nehemiah and the people rebuilt the broken walls of Jerusalem, we too must begin rebuilding the broken walls of our land.
