She doesn’t refuse to learn. She learns differently.
A mother in our community has a daughter with Autism. For years, she’s tried to find a school, and teachers - who understand how her daughter takes in information.
What she’s found instead is a familiar pattern. A teacher gets frustrated that she can’t focus for long, so instead of adjusting how they teach, they just do the work for her, write the answer, finish the worksheet. It looks like help. It isn’t.
Other teachers give up altogether. She’s called “distracting.” Told she “doesn’t listen,” that she “doesn’t want to do the work.” As if a different way of learning is a discipline problem instead of something to understand.
She isn’t asking anyone to lower the bar for her daughter. She’s asking someone to teach her the way she actually learns.
That’s what inclusion really means; not just a seat in the classroom, but real understanding of how a child’s mind works, and the will to teach to it.
This is why Samuel Ochora Foundation exists. To help move classrooms from “she doesn’t listen” to “how does she learn?” Because that one question changes everything.
