The Simple Power of a Phone Call

At Gulu Mission, we were reminded again this week just how valuable a quick phone call can be.

We rang a long‑standing supporter to thank him for a generous gift. It wasn’t a big, formal conversation, just a genuine chat. We were able to share a bit more about what’s happening on the ground, the kind of things you can’t always fit into a newsletter or a social post, and it gave him the opportunity to ask some questions.

Before we finished, he said how much he loves our charity and the work we do, and how much he’s appreciated the personal contact over the years.

Hearing that meant a lot. It really does make a difference.

In the rush of everyday work, it’s easy to rely on emails and updates. But sometimes the most meaningful connection comes from simply picking up the phone.

Let’s not underestimate the power of a simple phone call.

👏🏼Thanks to the generosity of a kind supporter, we’re building another borehole (No. 7) in Gulu, bringing safe, fresh water to a community that needs it most.

Not water shared with cattle. 🐄🐂
Not water carrying mosquito larvae and disease. 🦟
But clean, safe water you could give your child without hesitation. 🫗

When water is safe, everything changes.

Children stay in school. 📚
Families avoid preventable illness. 🤮
Communities grow stronger. 💪🏽
A borehole isn’t just a water source. 🚰
It’s about health, dignity and opportunity. ❤️‍🩹

If you’d like to help us bring clean water to another community in Gulu, we would love to hear from you, just message us. 📱

Some days, the hardest part of this journey is not being able to pick up the phone and share the latest milestones with the two people who were my biggest cheerleaders.

My Mum and Dad were incredibly proud of the work we do with Gulu Mission Initiative. Looking at this photo with Martin Mapenduzi (the then District Speaker in Gulu), I’m reminded of how proud they were of me, and how much their belief in this work fuelled me. They knew how much the work inspired and motivated me to keep going.

Though they aren't here today to see how much it's grown, I feel them in every life that is changed and every new project started. I'm doing this for them, knowing they are watching from above. ❤️

Who is the person/people that inspired your passion?

As many of you know, Steve and I have journeyed with many dear friends, colleagues, and partners in Uganda over the past 25 years. This beautiful nation and its people hold a very special place in our hearts.

With the general elections taking place tomorrow, we are holding the country in our thoughts and prayers. Having seen the resilience and spirit of Ugandans over the last two and a half decades, our hope is for a day marked by peace, safety, calm and unity across the nation, and wisdom and grace for all those involved in the process, especially for our dear friend and partner Mama Phoebe Ayoo.

Our prayer is that peace prevails and that the future remains bright for the nation we have come to love so much. 🙏

'The answer to poverty is what the people have, not what they don’t have'. (I heard this recently, but can’t remember who quoted it).

In Northern Uganda, communities are often defined by what they lack. resources, infrastructure and opportunity. But when you spend time on the ground in Gulu like we are, a different story emerges. People have skills, resilience, cultural knowledge, strong social bonds and relationships, and an incredible capacity to build solutions for themselves.

Gulu Mission works with local communities, leaders, and partners, not over them and not for them, but by combining local strengths with supportive partnerships.

Poverty is not solved by focusing on deficits, but by investing in people and partnerships that unlock what already exists 😀 🤝

When people talk about supporting children in need, the conversation often stops at donations. And yes, resources matter. But standing here in Gulu, walking hand-in-hand with a child who knows my name, I’m reminded that presence matters even more.

Many children here have grown up seeing visitors come and go, tourists who take photos, collect stories of poverty, and then disappear. They learn quickly that adults with cameras don’t always come back. And with that comes a quiet lesson, don’t get too close, don’t trust too deeply.

But relationship changes everything.

At Gulu Mission, we’re committed to showing up, not just once, but again and again. We believe in being known, not as strangers passing through, but as people who return. People who remember their stories, celebrate their growth, and call them by name. That consistency builds trust, and trust opens the door for real transformation in their lives.

Children flourish in the warmth of connection. This simple moment, a friendship, captures what our work is truly about, being present, being a trusted friend, and the power of showing up again and again.
