Lake Bunyonyi basin is experiencing environmental degradation, primarily because of increasing Population pressure. This has led to deforestation, increased soil erosion, increased discharges into the lake, pollution from farming activities. The environmental degradation of the basin is closely linked to its socio-economic development. Poverty leads to over-use of the basin’s resources, while the
degradation reduces the ability of the resource base to provide a sustainable livelihood. These issues cross basin borders and require integrated approach to their management. It is in recognition of these threats that the project is developing a framework for development and management of the water resources of the kabale district, so that subsequent development oriented investments will be sustainable in the long-term. It is also preparing a small number of such development investment proposals for subsequent funding within a consistent development. Objectives/Outcomes:
The project addresses the following specific objectives;
i. Establishment of a sustainable cooperative framework for joint management of water resources of the kabale district. Development of an investment strategy and conducting of pre-feasibility studies. Building capacity at all levels for sustainable management and development of Mara River Basin. Implementing small-scale investment projects to build early confidence in kabale district community. Impact Statement
The lake Bunyonyi Basin initiative contributes to improve living conditions of the basin communities through the creation of an enabling environment for sustainable development oriented investments and building capacity of staff and communities in integrated water resources management and development.
