A wall can tell a story.

On 5 August, .ngo led by and and we at with collaborating artists , .bienfait.art, .trezor and , began a community mural in Masanafu, a suburban area in Rubaga Division, Kampala, Uganda, where our community art center is found.

The idea was simple: to celebrate the identity, stories and character of the people who call this community home.
What started as a blank wall slowly became something much bigger.

One brushstroke at a time.
One colour at a time.
One idea building on another.

Children and other community members also joined in, adding their own hands, ideas and energy to the mural.
This time-lapse gives you a glimpse of how the mural came to life.

And now, it’s ready.

What happens when children paint together?

They don’t just create a mural.

They practise listening, sharing, expressing themselves, trusting others, and discovering that their voice matters.

For children who have experienced adversity in any form, creating together can become a powerful space for connection, belonging, and healing.

This is why our collaboration with Cup of Color matters.

We believe collective art making is a vehicle for something bigger: helping young people heal, express, connect, build confidence, and imagine what’s possible.

A shared wall can become a shared sense of belonging.

What could change if more children had spaces to create together?

For Daniel Ssebugwawo, art is more than an activity, it is a way of expanding what children believe is possible.

Through our partnership with Suubi Community Development Organisation , children are given the space to think critically, create boldly, and express themselves beyond the limits of the traditional classroom.

Because when a child learns to imagine differently, they begin to see themselves, and their future, differently.

This is only the beginning. Where could their creativity take them?

From education and food to clean water, peace and security, the children explored what it means to be an African child.

It was inspiring to see them think deeply and express themselves through art. These are some of the ways children Ge the opportunity to imagine their future and visualise it, rhiwasy, they affirm that they are able.

Recognition is meaningful. But the work matters more.

We are honoured to share that , Founder of Faces Up Uganda, has been nominated for the School Impact category at the 5th Keturah Mental Health Awards by Heart2Heart Chat Mental Health Program

This recognition comes at an important time for our work.

At Faces Up, we have spent the past decade asking a simple question:

What if every child had a safe space to express themselves, discover their strengths and develop the tools they need to thrive at school and in life?

Our answer has been art.

Through our arts-based psychosocial support programmes, we work with educators and schools to create spaces where children can express emotions, build confidence, strengthen social connections and develop their creativity, particularly those growing up in circumstances where these opportunities are often limited.

We believe art is the vehicle, not the destination.

The destination is a child who feels seen.
A learner who believes in themselves.
A classroom where wellbeing matters alongside academic achievement.
And schools that are equipped to support the whole child.

Being nominated alongside changemakers advancing mental health across East Africa is an honour.

But more importantly, it shines a light on something we have believed from the beginning:

When we invest in children’s emotional wellbeing, we are investing in the future they are capable of building.

We dedicate this nomination to every educator who creates room for a child to be heard, every partner who believes in the power of creativity, and every young person who has picked up a brush, pencil or piece of paper and discovered something new about themselves.

The work continues.

Inclusion is more than being invited into the room.

It is being given the space to participate in a way that works for you.

At Kampala School for the Physically Handicapped, “My Colours, My Voice” created that space through something simple: colouring.

Children chose from four pre-drawn pictures: school, family, nature, and fruits.

From there, they decided how to bring their choice to life.

Through colour.
Through gestures.
Through words.

Or simply through the artwork itself.

The activity reminded us that creative expression does not have to look the same for everyone.

What matters is that every child has a way to participate, express themselves, and belong.

That’s the kind of space we want to keep creating. 🎨💛

We love welcoming visitors, but we especially love hosting those who roll up their sleeves and create alongside us.

This week, we're excited to welcome our friends from Cup of Color Tobias Weinhold and Aimee Mandjila, who are spending a few days with us as part of an exciting collaborative project that's beginning to take shape.

Together with talented artists Aksanti Bienfait (Free artist), Musinguzi , and Benjamin Trezor, we're bringing a collective mural to life, with the children soon joining in to add their own creativity and stories.

This is only the beginning. Stay tuned; we can't wait to share how this beautiful collaboration unfolds. 💙🎨
