While our student leaders were being equipped to lead, we were also listening to the teachers supporting them every day.

For the past six months, teachers in our partner schools have been implementing Art as Therapy to support the social, emotional and learning needs of their students.

We sat down with them to ask: What’s working? What isn’t? What support do you need? And what should we do differently?

At Faces Up Uganda, learning is one of our core values. These conversations help us turn frontline experience into data and insights that strengthen our programmes and guide better decisions.

Because meaningful impact isn’t just about doing the work, it’s about listening, learning and improving.

Last Saturday, Mengo Primary School
became a meeting place for young leaders from across
Rubaga Division.

More than 194 student leaders from the Art Clubs
across 30 primary schools in Rubaga came together for
the Leaders of Now Summit.

And it wasn't a day of sitting in a classroom and
listening to adults talk about leadership.

The children were constantly doing.

They introduced themselves to leaders from other
schools.

They chose the leadership quality they wanted to grow.

They created their own table agreements.

They built towers with spaghetti, tape and string.

They disagreed.

They listened.

They rebuilt.

They discussed real situations they could face as Art
Club leaders.

They explored questions around inclusion, conflict,
failure, limited resources and making sure everyone
gets a chance to participate.

And later, they returned to their school teams to think
about how they could strengthen their own Art Clubs.

The programme deliberately moved from connection →
reflection → teamwork → problem-solving → action.

Because leadership is not something we wanted them
simply to hear about.

We wanted them to experience it.

Leadership doesn't begin when you become an adult. It begins much earlier. It begins when a child speaks up for a friend...

Leadership doesn't begin when you become an adult.

It begins much earlier.

It begins when a child speaks up for a friend. When they notice someone being left out. When they help their classmates solve a problem. When they take responsibility for something they care about.

Across the schools where we work, we see children already taking on these responsibilities through their Art Clubs.

That is why we believe investing in children as leaders is important.

Not because we want children to behave like adults.

But because children deserve the opportunity to develop confidence, listen to others, make decisions, solve problems, include others and take responsibility for the things they care about.

This is the thinking behind Leaders of Now.

Last Saturday, 19 September, we brought together more than 200 student leaders from Art Clubs across Rubaga Division, who managed to join us at Mengo Primary School for a full day of learning, reflection, creativity and connection.

Because if we want young people to shape the future, we also have to give them opportunities to practise leadership now.

Much appreciation to the Ministry of Education and Sports Uganda, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Rubaga Division for enabling us to bring so many leaders in one place, as well as our wonderful partners Global Fund for Children and, Someone Else's Child, Inc. for the investment to make this work possible.

The Leaders of Now Summit is HERE! 🎉

What we’ve been waiting for has finally arrived!

Today, we’ve brought together student leaders from the art clubs we’ve created across 30 primary schools in Rubaga Division, right here at Mengo Primary School, for a full day of learning, leadership, creativity and connection.

The goal? To equip these young leaders with the skills, confidence and tools they need to lead their art clubs, inspire their peers and keep the work moving forward.

The energy is already HIGH! 🔥 The children are eager to learn, and our facilitators are ready to share, challenge and create with them.

This Saturday, 300+ young student leaders from across Rubaga Division will come together at Mengo Primary School for the Leaders of Now Summit.

They are student leaders from 30 primary schools, helping lead and guide their school art clubs.

We’re not bringing them together to tell them what kind of leaders to become. We’re creating space for them to build confidence, discover their strengths, learn from one another, and develop practical leadership skills.

Because leadership isn’t about having a title.

It’s about knowing you have the power to make a difference, now.

For Mulukusa, Uganda is more than a place on a map.

It is where he was born.
Where he lives.
Where he belongs.

And somehow, that idea of belonging finds its way into the painting too.

The little child he is painting reminds him of a stage of life he can no longer remember.

Learning to sit.
Being fed.
Growing from one stage to another.

So when someone looks at his painting, Steven hopes they don't just see a child.

He hopes they remember.
A beginning of their own.
A childhood moment.
A stage they once passed through.

A painting about a little child became a reflection on where we come from, how we grow, and what home means to us.

And perhaps that's what makes creating with young people so powerful.

You give them the space to make something; and sometimes, they give you a new way to see something you thought you already knew. 🎨

“It’s just a little kid I’m painting…” 🎨

During this academic holiday, we caught up with Mulukusa Steven as he worked on his painting.
Steven has been growing as a young artist with Faces Up for over 6 years.

As he painted, we wanted to understand what was taking shape on his canvas — and why.

A little child learning to sit.
A stage we all pass through, but rarely remember.

Steven can't remember learning to sit himself.
But when he watches other babies, he can imagine how he once was.
And that's where this painting begins.
Not with a big idea.
Just with a small moment from the very beginning of life — and a young artist taking the time to notice it.

Sometimes, art gives us a way to remember what we have forgotten. 🎨

Sometimes, the simplest things are worth practicing. 💛

At the Community Centre in Masanafu, a community in Kampala, everyday moments became little scenes: at home, at school and on the playground.

There was learning, laughter and, of course, a little showing off. 😄

Especially from Junior.

If you've ever been to the Community Centre, you probably know him. This time, he had his acting skills to show off.

Sometimes, the best way to learn is to step into the moment and play it out.

For Joshua, the best part of holiday classes isn't just the learning.

“I enjoy the holiday class sessions because I am always free, and we always dance and play football after the class.” 💛

That little sentence says a lot.

A holiday can be a time to slow down, try something new, make something, play with friends and simply enjoy being a child.

At the Faces Up Community Centre, we've been making space for all of that — bringing art and play into learning, especially for our younger children.

Learn. Play. Create. Connect.

Because sometimes, what a young person needs is not another lesson.

Sometimes, they just need a space where someone is there for them. 💛🎨

And we’ll keep making room for more moments like these.
