YOUTH ORGANIZATION FOR ANTI AIDS NETWORK SUPPPORT (YOFAANS)
PROFILE
About Us
We are a Community based Humanitarian Organization dedicated to fighting poverty and injustice and: reducing human suffering. We place special focus on most vulnerable people, youth at the risk of contacting STDs and people already affected by STDs especially HIV/AIDS, such people have the power to collectively fight the
spread of the disease through elevating poverty to enable youth at the higher risk to escape contracting HIV/AIDS. The youth are at the heart of YOFAANS's community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of disease including HIV/AIDs, and increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. YOFAANS also delivers emergency aid and awareness campaigns to People living positive and affected by natural disasters, and helps people rebuild their lives. OUR CORE VALUES
• Accountability
• Social inclusiveness
• Zero tolerance to HIV/AIDS
• Community Empowerment.
• Commitment.
1. Accountability
YOFAANS- believes that citizens/youth have a right to hold governments and institutions accountable, to expect them to respect their rights and do what they say they will do. Likewise, we believe that Community Based Organizations should be accountable to the communities in which they work, to partner organizations, and to those from whom they receive support.
2. Non-Allied (Social Inclusiveness)
YOFAANS Organization-is not a religious, political or a commercial organization; we are a Uganda’s national charity whose vision is to promote “Peace, HIV/AIDS free society, Development and Community Empowerment for All” among-st communities facing poverty and suffering as a result of natural or man-made disasters. We are therefore fully committed on providing humanitarian, early recovery and development support to all communities irrespective of religion, gender, creed, political affiliation, tribe etc
3. Zero tolerance to HIV/AIDS
We believe that our HIV/AIDS programs must provide information and services to vulnerable groups while addressing the underlying factors that lead people to make choices that put them at risk of infection. YOFAANS HIV/AIDS programs will link with our other sectors, including health, education and economic development. Through our HIV/AIDS programs, we help communities, men, women and children orphaned and made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS; develop peer education and outreach in communities; and increase access to services such as condoms, voluntary counseling and testing, anti-retro viral treatment, and STI prevention and treatment. Advocacy on behalf of vulnerable and marginalized populations is also an important part of our work. We also place additional emphasis on reducing stigma and work to ensure economic self sufficiency among people. For example our planned ASURU community based HIV/AIDS Care, Prevention and Poverty alleviation Project aims to build a local coordination mechanism model to mainstream HIV/AIDS- related prevention and care with poverty alleviation activities in west Nile region
the number of new HIV infected and impact of HIV and AIDS in those infected and affected HIV prevention treatment care and support need to be based on a thorough understanding of epidemic who is most at risk of infection and which behaviors are leading to new infection most at risk behaviors include; Men having s*x with men, Injecting drugs use and S*x for exchange of money or other material
4. Community Empowerment and Commitment
YOFAANS believes that given timely & appropriate support all affected communities have an inherent ability to pull themselves out of cases. Therefore, the approach adopted when implementing our programs is fully participatory; in which ideas from the affected communities form the basic foundation of our planning, design, implementation, monitoring, reporting and evaluation of all initiatives. We also expect full commitment to these values from our staff, partners and targeted beneficiaries. Our Board of Directors
YOFAANS’ board of directors is the organization's governing body, elected by the members at an annual general meeting. All members are responsible for gaining a basic understanding and initiating actions in support of YOFAANS’ mission, goals and programs. This includes assisting in expanding YOFAANS’ outreach and increasing its visibility and donor support. All board members are volunteers and serve without compensation. Our Executive Team
The Association General Assembly is responsible for the election of YOFAANS’ Executive Director (chairperson), deputy chairperson, treasurer, secretary, Ass Secretary and the Advisor. The Executive Director in liaison with the other Executive board members recruits the rest of the team including the General Administrator and other senior managers in charge of finance, and administration, human resources, program, and external relations. WHAT WE DO
YOFAANS tackles underlying causes of poverty and suffering so that people not only become self-sufficient but also more resilient to future shocks, trends, seasonality patterns and stigma. Recognizing that women and children suffer disproportionately from poverty and HIV/AIDS YOFAANS places special emphasis on working with women and children to create permanent social change. Youth are at the heart of YOFAANS community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. YOFAANS also delivers emergency aid to the communities and helps people rebuild their lives. With Agriculture, Livestock Production and Natural Resource Management
YOFAANS helps families produce more food and increase their income while managing their natural resources and preserving the environment for future generations. YOFAANS works with farmers to increase their crop and livestock yields through activities such as planting new seed varieties, improved animal husbandry techniques, home gardening and irrigation. Alternative Livelihoods and Economic Development
YOFAANS economic development programs assist impoverished families by supporting income generating activities, especially those operated by the youth. YOFAANS initiates community savings-and-loan programs and provides technical training to help people begin or expand small businesses that will increase family income. For example through our Reintegration Project for ASURU, we aim to provide vocational training on food preservation and preparation as well as business management to 300 women, mainly from the most vulnerable families to enable them not only acquire the skills needed to start their own small businesses but also be in a position to get employment in the many businesses run by NGOs, e.g. YOFAANS in liaison with System Science Consultants is implementing a Project for Improvement of Basic Skills and Vocational Training in Uganda supported by GENESES FARM in Asuru Village. Basic Education
YOFAANS is dedicated to securing basic education for all. Experience shows that learning attacks poverty at its roots. Educated people can make thoughtful and informed decisions that will positively affect their lives, families, communities and the world. Mothers are more likely to have healthier children and higher incomes. Today we work alongside communities, government and partner organizations at many levels to address all aspect
