After equipping 15 women and men from refugee communities in Uganda and Kajo-Keji, South Sudan with restorative justice skills, we have now begun our twice-weekly virtual coaching and mentorship sessions to help them put those skills into practice.

We meet every Monday and Thursday for two hours, guiding participants as they prepare to facilitate restorative circles that strengthen relationships, resolve conflicts peacefully, and promote healing in their communities. Two coaching sessions have already been completed, and we are encouraged by the participants’ commitment and growing confidence.

Building peace is a journey, and ongoing mentorship ensures community peacebuilders are supported every step of the way.

🌿 Building Peace Starts with Equipping Local Leaders

On 6–7 June 2026, RJ Africa had the privilege of bringing together 15 community leaders from four locations across Uganda and South Sudan for a two-day Restorative Justice Training in Palorinya Refugee Settlement.

Over two days, participants learned practical skills in restorative justice, active listening, empathy, accountability, and restorative circle facilitation. Through role plays, group discussions, and hands-on practice, they gained the confidence to transform conflict into opportunities for healing, dialogue, and stronger relationships.

One of the highlights of the training was seeing two graduates from RJ Africa's 2025 Training of Trainers (ToT) Cohort serve as co-facilitators alongside our lead trainers. Their growth demonstrates the power of mentoring local leaders who are now equipping others to become peacebuilders in their own communities.

This training is only the beginning. Participants are now receiving ongoing coaching, mentorship, and follow-up mini-trainings as they prepare to graduate as Restorative Justice Circle Facilitators. Soon, they will be leading restorative justice circles and community dialogues that promote healing, strengthen social cohesion, and prevent violence across Uganda and South Sudan.

At RJ Africa, we believe that lasting peace is built by empowering local people with the skills, confidence, and support to become agents of change in their own communities.

Together, we are building communities where people choose dialogue over division, understanding over hostility, and restoration over retaliation. Thanks to River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding for being the founding partner and supporter of RJ Africa project.

The training of trainers model is the vehicle that will create a ripple effect of peace by empowering peace builders who then go to empower many more in their communities.

So meeting our 2025 cohort this weekend to share their dreams and hopes as they begin to serve their communities was truly refreshing.

Serving in four locations in Uganda refugees Settement and South Sudan, our ToTs are helping their communities mend bonds broken through decades of unresolved conflicts and tribal divides.

As they shared their stories, breakthroughs and challenges, we can’t wait to see what future holds for this work for them. They have been equipped with the tools which they are now putting to good use to build unity and transforms conflicts in a way that leads to healing and repair.

Growing a New Generation of Peacebuilders 🌍🕊️
Last year, Restorative Justice Africa (RJA) celebrated a major milestone in strengthening sustainable peace in Uganda and South Sudan. In partnership with the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding, we successfully completed Phase One of our Training of Trainers (ToT) program, equipping seven new restorative justice trainers of trainers (ToT) from four locations across refugee and post-conflict communities. This marks our second ( ToT) cohort, bringing the total number of ToTs to over 12 local peacebuilders who are now equipped to train others, facilitate circles and foster healing, and non-violent conflict transformation in their communities.

During this phase, participants engaged in five core modules while receiving coaching and mentorship in restorative circle facilitation and community training. Through guided practice and teach-backs, participants strengthened their ability to facilitate meaningful dialogues and help communities resolve conflicts peacefully. This phase concluded with a mock training, where participants demonstrated their skills and readiness to step into leadership roles.

In Phase Two, in the next four months, each Trainer of Trainers will lead a Community Action Project, giving them the opportunity to apply their skills while serving their communities. These projects will strengthen their confidence and competence in facilitating circles, leading dialogues, and delivering restorative justice training. The program will culminate in a two-day RJ training designed and delivered entirely by the ToTs themselves, marking a powerful step toward local ownership of peacebuilding.

Our TOT model is built on a simple but transformative idea: peace grows when local leaders are empowered to lead it. By equipping community members in refugee settlements and areas recovering from war with restorative justice skills, we are multiplying peacebuilders who can continue this work long into the future.

The ripple effect is powerful. Each trainer can reach dozens—if not hundreds—of people through dialogues, restorative circles, training, and community peace awareness . This is the foundation of a growing network of local peacebuilders who will continue to nurture healing, understanding, and sustainable peace in their communities, in Uganda, South Sudan and across the continent.
