✨Healing Communities Through Restorative Justice in Palorinya Refugee Settlement ✨

This week, RJ Africa held a powerful Restorative Justice presentation with 27 community leaders in Palorinya Refugee Settlement, led by Victor our trainer, with our ToTs Eddy Manaseh and Annet Achiro.

For one inspiring hour, participants explored how restorative justice can bring healing, inclusion, and fairness to the way conflicts are resolved.

Community leaders shared their excitement about this new approach and requested:

1. Training in Restorative Justice for leaders and block representatives
2. Collaboration with RJ Africa to strengthen peaceful conflict resolution
3. A referral pathway to connect difficult cases to RJ Africa’s facilitators

One participant, Pastor Juru Grace, expressed heartfelt appreciation:
“This awareness is the first of its kind. We have had cases in the community that we couldn’t address. Just listening to its introduction, it could heal our communities. My request is that training should be conducted for all the community leaders.”

We are inspired by the passion and openness of the Palorinya leaders who believe, like us, that justice should restore, not destroy. Together, we’re building pathways of peace — one circle at a time. 🕊️

Thanks for the support of the River Phoenix Center for Peace building.

Over five decades of violent conflict in Sudan and now South Sudan have driven millions of South Sudanese into refugee settlements in Neighboring countries. In these settlements, culturally diverse tribes and groups that are in constant conflict with one another share the same community spaces, such as farmlands, schools, places of worship and water points.

Such conflicts often become violent and continue the pain and trauma caused by displacement. Without the knowledge of conflict dynamics and skills to constructively handle them, youth who form the majority of the refugees demographics, become the primary actors and casualties of such violence.

In Palorinya refugees settlement, RJ Africa has been equipping these youth with vital skills to understand and manage conflicts non- violently. They also learned how to make positive choices for their future and build leadership skills to become positive agents of change. These youngsters are ready to go out and share their learning with over 140,000 community members.

The hope is that when they return to South Sudan, they will transfer these skills and knowledge to build a better country.

An important milestone, as 56 refugees youth graduated in RJ Africa's communication and self-esteem training this September 9th in Palorinya refugee settlement ! 🎈🎉

Youth form about 80% of the population in refugee settlements. Yet decades of conflicts and trauma have left them with no sense of value in themselves and no direction. They are stateless, discouraged and hopeless. Many of them see no future for themselves.

Consequently, many of them drop out of school
and engage in violent crime and drug abuse. Also extreme poverty drives refugees youth to rob and steal; the girls suffer gender based violence, and suffer from sexually transmitted diseases and the horrors of teenage pregnancy.

RJ Africa, with support from River Phoenix Center for Peace Building is empowering these youth with the tools to build resilience and hope needed to pursue and achieve their dreams. For example, by learning to set goals, manage anger well, develop a healthy self-esteem, and make better choices, these young refugees hope to transform conflicts into opportunities for peaceful coexistence and collaboration among conflicting tribes.

Instead of engaging is violence, these young people now want to channel their energy to do their studies and to learn to create peace necessary for economic progress and prosperity.
