Our mentor, Maksym Dzhum — a church pastor, a serviceman, and simply a wonderful, kind, compassionate, and highly respected Person with a capital “P” — conducts weekly classes under the Afterschool Geekery program for children from low-income families in the city of Odesa.

The city of Odesa is under daily missile attacks. Many of these children have trauma related to the war, and each of them hopes for a better future.

With great love and despite the difficult circumstances, Maksym carries out his work with dedication and excellence. Every photo and every report shows how deeply he cares about helping children and others.

We sincerely value and respect Maksym both as a mentor and as a person. Thank you for your dedicated and impactful work!

Місто Одеса щодня зазнає обстрілів російськими ракетами. Багато з цих дітей мають травми, пов’язані з війною, і кожен із них сподівається на краще майбутнє.

З великою любов’ю, попри складні обставини, Максим виконує свою роботу якісно та віддано. Кожне фото і кожен звіт підтверджують, наскільки щиро він прагне допомагати дітям і не тільки.

The war in Ukraine leaves deep wounds every day—wounds that cannot be measured by numbers alone. Behind every statistic are broken lives, lost homes, and childhoods that can never be returned.

As of today, according to official sources, more than 1,700 children have been affected: over 500 have been killed, and more than 1,200 have been injured to varying degrees. Sadly, these numbers are not final.

The greatest impact has been on children in regions and cities such as Kharkiv, Mariupol, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipro—places where hostilities and shelling have been the most intense.

Children live under the sound of air raid sirens, study in shelters, and grow up in constant fear. They are forced to grow up too quickly, yet no child should ever have to know what war is.

Many foundations and charitable organizations work every day to improve the lives of children affected by the war and those who have become internally displaced. They provide housing, education, psychological support, and basic necessities. Thousands of children have lost their homes, and many have even lost their parents.

We have no right to remain silent. We must remember and speak about this—for those who have already suffered and for those we can still protect.

Війна в Україні щодня залишає глибокі рани, які неможливо виміряти лише цифрами. За кожною статистикою — зруйновані долі, втрачені домівки та дитинство, якого вже не повернути. Станом на сьогодні, за даними офіційних джерел, постраждали понад 1 700 дітей: понад 500 загинули, більше ніж 1 200 отримали поранення різного ступеня тяжкості. І ці цифри, на жаль, не є остаточними. Найбільше постраждали діти у таких регіонах і містах, як Харків, Маріуполь, Київ, Чернігів, Миколаїв, Херсон, Запоріжжя та Дніпро. Саме там бойові дії та обстріли були найінтенсивнішими. Діти живуть під звуки сирен, навчаються в укриттях і ростуть у постійному страху. Вони рано дорослішають, але ніхто з них не мав би знати, що таке війна. Багато фондів та благодійних організацій щодня працюють над тим, щоб покращити життя дітей, які постраждали від війни та стали внутрішньо переміщеними особами. Вони допомагають із житлом, освітою, психологічною підтримкою та базовими потребами. Адже тисячі дітей втратили свої домівки, а багато хто — навіть батьків. Ми не маємо права мовчати. Ми повинні пам’ятати і говорити про це — заради тих, хто вже постраждав, і заради тих, кого ще можна захистити.

Every month, our mentors conduct around 50 IT literacy classes using the Scratch program for Roma children from low-income families. 💻

We don’t just teach — we create opportunities. Each lesson helps children take a step toward a future where they can access quality education and confidently build their lives.

Through these classes, children develop essential skills such as reading, writing, and basic math, as well as fine motor skills, creativity, and analytical thinking. Teachers at schools are already noticing positive changes — students are improving in math, reading, and writing. 📚

Group activities also help children socialize: they learn to communicate with peers, work as a team, and support one another. Working with Scratch blocks also has a therapeutic effect — it helps reduce stress and brings a sense of calm. 🧩

This is especially important for internally displaced children. Parents share that after the classes, their children come home happy, feeling like kids again, and for a while forget the stress they experienced when they had to leave their homes because of the war.

Our mentors are more than just teachers. They become friends and a source of support: they communicate, listen, and help children cope with emotions and challenges. Through care, respect, and kindness, they give children something truly valuable — a sense of safety and belief in themselves. ❤️

Together, we are changing these children’s future today.

Щомісяця наші ментори проводять близько 50 занять з ІТ-грамотності за програмою Scratch для ромських дітей із малозабезпечених сімей. 💻

Ми не просто навчаємо — ми відкриваємо можливості. Кожне заняття допомагає дітям зробити крок до майбутнього, в якому вони зможуть здобути якісну освіту та впевнено будувати своє життя.

Завдяки цим урокам діти розвивають базові навички: читання, письмо, рахування, а також дрібну моторику, креативне та аналітичне мислення. Вчителі у школах вже відзначають позитивні зміни — учні краще справляються з математикою, читанням і письмом. 📚

Групові заняття також допомагають дітям соціалізуватися: вони вчаться спілкуватися з однолітками, працювати в команді та підтримувати одне одного. Робота з блоками у Scratch має ще й терапевтичний ефект — вона знижує стрес і допомагає дітям заспокоїтися. 🧩

Особливо це важливо для дітей ВПО. Батьки діляться, що після занять їхні діти повертаються додому радісними, знову відчувають дитинство і хоча б на деякий час забувають про пережитий стрес через війну.

Наші ментори — це не лише викладачі. Вони стають для дітей друзями та підтримкою: спілкуються, вислуховують, допомагають впоратися з емоціями та труднощами. Через увагу, повагу і турботу вони дарують дітям найцінніше — відчуття безпеки та віру в себе. ❤️

Разом ми змінюємо майбутнє цих дітей вже сьогодні.

Засновниця «Фонду Людської Гідності в Україні»

Анна-Марія Маркович народилася в місті Ужгород, Україна. Вона працює у сфері психології та активно займається громадською діяльністю, спрямованою на підтримку ромської громади. У своїй роботі поєднує професійну психологічну практику з освітніми та соціальними ініціативами. Зокрема, проводить навчання для ромських жінок та працює дитячим психологом, надаючи допомогу ромським дітям і сім’ям, які переживають складні життєві ситуації.

Анна-Марія є засновницею «Фонду Людської Гідності в Україні», а також представляє в Україні благодійну організацію “Human Dignity in Action” на посаді національної менеджерки. Вона має дві вищі освіти - юридичну та психологічну, що дозволяє їй у своїй діяльності поєднувати правозахисну роботу з наданням професійної психологічної підтримки.

Протягом останніх трьох років Анна-Марія активно займається волонтерством, допомагаючи внутрішньо переміщеним ромам та людям, які постраждали внаслідок війни. Значну частину її роботи становить психологічна підтримка та супровід сімей у кризових обставинах. Водночас вона бере участь у громадських ініціативах, спрямованих на захист прав ромів, зміцнення їхньої гідності та розширення рівних можливостей. Її діяльність спрямована на розвиток ромської громади та покращення якості життя ромського народу.

Anna-Maria Markovich
Founder of the “Foundation for Human Dignity in Ukraine”

Anna-Maria Markovich was born in Uzhhorod, Ukraine. She works in the field of psychology and is actively engaged in civic initiatives aimed at supporting the Roma community. In her work, she combines professional psychological practice with educational and social initiatives. In particular, she organizes and conducts training programs for Roma women and works as a child psychologist, providing support to Roma children and families who are experiencing difficult life circumstances.

Anna-Maria is the founder of the “Foundation for Human Dignity in Ukraine” and also represents the charitable organization “Human Dignity in Action” in Ukraine as a Country Manager. She holds two higher education degrees — in law and psychology — which enables her to combine a human-rights approach with professional psychological support in her work.

Over the past three years, Anna-Maria has been actively involved in volunteer work, supporting internally displaced Roma people and those affected by the war. A significant part of her work focuses on providing psychological assistance and guidance to families facing crisis situations. At the same time, she participates in civic initiatives aimed at protecting the rights of Roma people, strengthening their dignity, and promoting equal opportunities. Her work is dedicated to the development of the Roma community and improving the quality of life of the Roma people.

У серпні 2025 року в місті Берегово відбувся літній табір, у якому діти ромського походження проводили свої літні дні за програмою Afterschool Geekery. Їхній звичайний день у таборі проходив таким чином.

Зранку вони приходили до своєї школи-інтернату Opre Roma в Берегові, сідали пити чай із печивом і розпочинали заняття з менторами Світланою Чирибан та Маріанною Логойдою. Заняття проходили в дуже веселій атмосфері, адже наші ментори мають великий досвід роботи з дітьми та знаходять підхід до кожного з них з особливим теплом і добротою.

Заняття тривали три години, після чого всі разом дружно йшли обідати. Благодійні організації Human Dignity in Action у партнерстві з Foundation of Human Dignity in Ukraine забезпечили дітям комфортне перебування в таборі: щоб їм було цікаво та щоб вони не залишалися голодними, організації подбали про обіди й перекуси.

Після обіду діти знову сідали за заняття та вивчали програму Scratch. Після плідної роботи учні виходили на вулицю, займалися спортом, бігали, гуляли та просто спілкувалися. Звичайно, усе це проходило під теплим і турботливим наглядом наших менторів.

In August 2025, a summer camp took place in the city of Berehove, where children of Roma origin spent their summer days participating in the Afterschool Geekery program. This is how a typical day at the camp looked.

In the morning, they came to their boarding school, Opre Roma, in Berehove, had tea with cookies, and began their lessons with mentors Svitlana Chyryban and Marianna Lohoida. The classes were held in a very cheerful atmosphere, as our mentors have extensive experience working with children and approach each child with special warmth and kindness.

The lessons lasted three hours, after which everyone went to lunch together. The charitable organizations Human Dignity in Action, in partnership with the Foundation of Human Dignity in Ukraine, ensured that the children had a comfortable stay at the camp. To keep them engaged and well-nourished, the organizations provided lunches and snacks.

After lunch, the children returned to their studies and learned the Scratch programming platform. Following their productive work, the students went outside to engage in sports activities, run, play, and simply socialize. Of course, all of this took place under the warm and caring supervision of our mentors.

Це наша менторка Надія Фонтош! Надія проживає у селі Тур’я Пасіка, де має вдома окремий клас для навчання дітей. Вона ромського походження та має чудову сім’ю. Надія дуже добра та чуйна до всіх мешканців села, завжди всім допомагає, є волонтеркою та активісткою. Разом із чоловіком вони заснували власну благодійну організацію, у якій допомагають усім нужденним. До дітей Надія ставиться особливо турботливо та з великим розумінням. Свою роботу вона виконує від усього серця та з великою вірою у те, що наші ромські дітки багато чому навчяться і матимуть гарне майбутнє. Надія працює у програмі «Afterschool Geekery» від самого її початку, має викладацький досвід понад 15 років, повну середню та спеціальну освіту. Тому ми без вагань довірилися їй, знаючи, що вона виконає цю роботу на вищому рівні та з добрим серцем, адже у нашій справі це найголовніше. Фонд Людської Гідності в Україні щиро вдячний за її віддану працю!

Meet our mentor, Nadiia Fontosh! Nadiia lives in the village of Turia Pasika, where she has a dedicated classroom at home for teaching children. She is of Roma origin and has a wonderful family. Nadiia is very kind and compassionate toward all the residents of Turia Pasika; she is always ready to help and is an active volunteer. Together with her husband, she founded a charitable organization to support those in need. Nadiia treats children with special care and great understanding. She does her work from the heart, with a deep belief that our Roma children will learn a lot and have a bright future. Nadiia has been working with the Afterschool Geekery program since its very beginning. She has over 15 years of teaching experience and holds both secondary and specialized education. That is why we trusted her without hesitation, knowing she would perform this work at the highest level and with a kind heart—which is the most important thing in our mission. The "Foundation of Human Dignity in Ukraine" is sincerely grateful for her dedicated work!
