New Research Collaboration at ICMU

Dear Friends!
We are pleased to welcome Piotr Achinger and Semen Slobodianiuk to the ICMU working space for a research residency running from May 10–22.

This collaboration brings together expertise from the Polish Academy of Sciences and the University of Copenhagen to tackle complex questions in p-adic geometry.

The project aims to investigate the properties of the characteristic variety in rigid spaces, building upon research initiated in Semen’s master’s thesis. The first step would be to prove analogs of classical results in algebraic setting and to prove comparison theorems.

Piotr Achinger – Simons Professor, and Academic Director of Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Mathematics at Kyiv School of Economics, Ukraine. He focuses on topology of algebraic varieties.
Semen Slobodianiuk – PhD student at the University of Copenhagen. He is interested in recent developments of the theory of analytic de Rham stacks as well in non A1-invariant motivic homotopy theory.

ICMU continues to support international mathematical synergy by providing a dedicated environment for high-level research and academic exchange. We anticipate valuable insights from this collaboration.

About Collaboration programme

Application for the collaboration research program is considered on a rolling basis and allows a group of researchers from different institutions for in-person collaboration for up to two weeks.

ICMU Scientific Director Maryna Viazovska elected to the National Academy of Sciences

We are proud to announce the formal induction of Scientific Director of ICMU, Maryna Viazovska, into the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). This prestigious recognition took place during the 163rd NAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., held from April 24–26, 2026.

Elected as an international member in recognition of her distinguished achievements in original research, Maryna Viazovska — who also serves as the Chair of Number Theory at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland — is among a select group of world-leading scientists honored this year. Notably, she is one of only two scientists from Ukraine to receive this distinction this year, representing an all-female duo for the country. Election to the Academy is one of the highest honours a scientist can achieve, with only 556 international members worldwide.

Maryna Viazovska’s inclusion in the Academy underscores her position as a global leader in mathematics. For ICMU, this recognition reinforces our mission to connect Ukrainian talent with the international scientific elite. Her leadership continues to prove that even in challenging times, Ukrainian mathematical excellence remains at the very forefront of global research.

Congratulations, Maryna!

Closing of the ICMU Winter School "Constructive Approximation and Its Applications"

The ICMU Winter School has come to a successful close, leaving behind not only new knowledge but a profound sense of scientific community where mathematics unites and inspires.

The program was packed with lectures, discussions, and informal academic exchange. The intensive work and genuine curiosity created an environment where complex ideas became clear and science felt more accessible than ever.

The final sessions featured presentations summarizing the results of collaborative work. The most engaged participants were recognized for their scientific initiative with awards and gifts, serving as motivation for their future research.

The closing day served as a reminder that science does not exist in a vacuum. It connects people, dissolves borders, and creates a space for cooperation and mutual growth. Despite the cold weather, the warm atmosphere prevailed—mathematics and science became the common thread that warmed us all.

New meetings, ideas, projects, and scientific challenges lie ahead. ICMU continues its mission, and this winter school marks another step forward in the development of the international mathematical community.

The ICMU Winter School "Constructive Approximation and Its Applications" has started!

The ICMU Winter School "Constructive Approximation and Its Applications" began its work on Sunday, January 25 in a warm atmosphere among the Carpatian mountains. The school is dedicated to current issues in approximation theory, a field closely linked to classical and modern analysis, numerical methods, and wide-ranging applications in science and engineering. Special attention is given to constructive methods and their use in developing approximate and exact analytical solutions for equations describing complex processes, including those in engineering.

Liliia Turovska, First Vice-Rector of Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech, emphasizing the importance of developing international scientific cooperation and supporting young researchers. Professor Clemente Cesarano (International Telematic University UNINETTUNO, Rome, Italy) also greeted the participants, highlighting the significance of constructive approximation for both modern applied and theoretical mathematics. The official opening of the winter school was conducted by Andrii Zagorodnyuk, Head of the Department of Mathematical and Functional Analysis, who wished the participants productive work and meaningful scientific discussions.

A special highlight was the introduction of the students to the distinguished scientist Arieh Iserles (University of Cambridge, United Kingdom), which marked the start of the school’s activities. This was followed by a fascinating lecture that served as a key part of the program and inspired participants toward new scientific achievements.

We would like to express our gratitude to the school organizers:
Roman Dmytryshyn, Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University
Natalia Parfinovych, Oles Honchar Dnipro National University
Anatolii Romanuyk, Institute of Mathematics of NASU
