Dear Friends,

It's a kind remind that the call for the application of the ICMU Student Research Award is open! The Centre continues to support talented students and recognise outstanding work in the mathematical sciences and award a cash prize of 50,000 Ukrainian hryvnia for the best student research papers.

Students of Ukrainian universities (as of May 2026) can submit:
- Bachelor's and Master's degree theses;
- Articles published or submitted to scientific journals.
All applications will be evaluated by a committee consisting of representatives of several Ukrainian higher educational institutions and members of the Co-ordination Committee of ICMU. The results will be announced in December 2026.

Audience: Undergraduate and graduate students
Application deadline: 15 October 2026

Self-similar Groups and their Applications

The course by Dmytro Savchuk (University of South Florida) introduces the class of self-similar groups (or groups generated by automata) and to survey their applications. These groups were formally introduced in the beginning of 1960’s, but it took a while to realize their importance, utility, and, at the same time, complexity.

The course is mostly self-contained. Students, who successfully complete homework assignments, will obtain a certificate of mini-course completion.

We are pleased to invite you to register for upcoming online mini-course on Geometric Discrepancy Theory

The course by Dmytro Bilyk (University of Minnesota) discusses the origins and applications of the theory, various constructions of well-distributed low-discrepancy point sets, such as lattices, the van der Corput digit-reversing set, and jittered sampling, as well as bounds for various geometric discrepancies, including axis-parallel boxes and spherical caps.

Particular emphasis will be placed on methods of analysis and connections to other areas, such as energy minimization and combinatorial discrepancy. Students who successfully complete the homework assignments will receive a certificate of mini-course completion.

New Research Collaboration at ICMU

Dear Friends!
We are pleased to welcome Piotr Achinger and Semen Slobodianiuk to the ICMU working space for a research residency running from May 10–22.

This collaboration brings together expertise from the Polish Academy of Sciences and the University of Copenhagen to tackle complex questions in p-adic geometry.

The project aims to investigate the properties of the characteristic variety in rigid spaces, building upon research initiated in Semen’s master’s thesis. The first step would be to prove analogs of classical results in algebraic setting and to prove comparison theorems.

Piotr Achinger – Simons Professor, and Academic Director of Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Mathematics at Kyiv School of Economics, Ukraine. He focuses on topology of algebraic varieties.
Semen Slobodianiuk – PhD student at the University of Copenhagen. He is interested in recent developments of the theory of analytic de Rham stacks as well in non A1-invariant motivic homotopy theory.

ICMU continues to support international mathematical synergy by providing a dedicated environment for high-level research and academic exchange. We anticipate valuable insights from this collaboration.

About Collaboration programme

Application for the collaboration research program is considered on a rolling basis and allows a group of researchers from different institutions for in-person collaboration for up to two weeks.

ICMU Scientific Director Maryna Viazovska elected to the National Academy of Sciences

We are proud to announce the formal induction of Scientific Director of ICMU, Maryna Viazovska, into the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). This prestigious recognition took place during the 163rd NAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., held from April 24–26, 2026.

Elected as an international member in recognition of her distinguished achievements in original research, Maryna Viazovska — who also serves as the Chair of Number Theory at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland — is among a select group of world-leading scientists honored this year. Notably, she is one of only two scientists from Ukraine to receive this distinction this year, representing an all-female duo for the country. Election to the Academy is one of the highest honours a scientist can achieve, with only 556 international members worldwide.

Maryna Viazovska’s inclusion in the Academy underscores her position as a global leader in mathematics. For ICMU, this recognition reinforces our mission to connect Ukrainian talent with the international scientific elite. Her leadership continues to prove that even in challenging times, Ukrainian mathematical excellence remains at the very forefront of global research.
