It has now been 40 years and the Dogs of Chernobyl team is on the ground in Chornobyl performing medical care to the dogs

They’ve lived and bred inside the Exclusion Zone for generations—and scientists believe their DNA may transform our knowledge about the effects of radiation.

This male dog was recently neutered by our Dogs of Chernobyl team in Chernobyl town, and today we completed one of our important follow-up checks.

Part of our work in the Exclusion Zone is not just sterilizing dogs, but monitoring them afterward to ensure they recover well and remain healthy. During this check, we noted a small amount of swelling, which can happen occasionally, but he is doing fine and recovering normally.

This is also a good example of how we sterilize dogs in the zone: each animal is humanely captured, examined, safely anesthetized, sterilized by our veterinary team, monitored closely during recovery, and then receives follow-up checks like this one to make sure everything is healing as it should.

Long-term follow-up matters. Sterilization is not just surgery—it’s ongoing care, and every dog we treat deserves that commitment. We’re happy to report this boy is doing well.

We’re back in Chornobyl. Our Dogs of Chernobyl team is on the ground over the next several days providing critical medical treatments and sterilization surgeries for the dogs and cats of the Exclusion Zone.

We’re happy to report the dogs are looking very healthy and in great condition, and it is incredible to be back in the Zone doing this important work. Every visit reminds us why this mission matters.

Please follow along for updates from the field as we share photos and stories from this mission and please support our efforts if you can. Your support helps make this lifesaving work possible.

It’s great to be back in Chornobyl, doing the work we love for the animals who depend on us.

Meet the Team Behind the Dogs of Chernobyl Mission 🇺🇦🐾

We’d like to introduce you to one of the incredible people who makes our work possible…. Darrin, our lead catching specialist.

Darrin has been with us since 2018, and he is truly the strength and backbone of our organization. Without him, so much of what we do simply wouldn’t be possible.

As the leader of our catching team, Darren plays a critical role in safely and humanely securing animals so they can receive the care they desperately need. This work requires patience, skill, and an incredible level of compassion and Darrin brings all of that and more every single day.

What makes Darrin exceptional isn’t just his expertise, it’s his heart. He treats every animal with kindness, ensuring they are safe, calm, and as comfortable as possible, even in the most challenging conditions.

We are beyond grateful to have Darrin on our team.

📸 Stay tuned over the coming weeks as we share Darrin’s photos from our latest visit to Ukraine, you’ll get a firsthand look at the dedication, care, and reality of the work happening on the ground.

Please join us in sending Darrin a big thank you for everything he does. 💙💛
