🌊 Learning by Seeing. Learning by Doing. 🐠

The Jongowe Development Foundation (JDF) recently organized an inspiring study visit to Uroa, bringing together fishers, community members, youth, and government leaders.

The goal was to deepen understanding and spark collective action towards restoring and protecting our ocean.

During the visit, participants had the opportunity to:
✨ Discover practical, community-led approaches to marine ecosystem restoration
✨ Observe how artificial coral reefs are built and sustained
✨ Learn effective methods for protecting marine resources
✨ Strengthen collaboration between communities and key stakeholders

This hands-on experience didn’t just build knowledge—it strengthened unity and inspired real commitment to restoring marine habitats and increasing fish breeding areas in Jongowe.

🌱 The ocean connects us all and together, we have the power to protect it.

🤝 Let’s continue working together to restore, conserve, and sustain our marine resources for generations to come.

“To understand clearly where we are going, we must remember where we came from.” 🌊💙

On January 24, 2025, the Jongowe Development Foundation (JDF) proudly supported a meaningful historical timeline to trace back the life journey our ancestors passed through storytelling session that brought together community elders and the young generation with one shared mission: saving the Jongowe Sea.

Through the voices of our elders, we traveled back in time to understand how the ocean once was — healthy, rich, and full of fish and other marine resources. Elders explained that fishers spent only a short time at sea but returned with large catches because Jongowe had strong coral reefs, seagrass, and natural fish breeding areas.

Together with the youth, we discussed today’s challenges and, most importantly, identified actions to restore the sea to its original state.

This intergenerational dialogue is a key part of JDF’s efforts to renovate our marine environment. We believe that true restoration begins with listening, learning, and acting together. 🗣️🤝

🌱 FOLLOW-UP ON MANGROVE RESTORATION ACTIVITIES IN JONGOWE VILLAGE 🌊

Environmental education initiatives in Jongowe Village, implemented under the technical and financial support from the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Zanzibar, have taken an important step forward following the planting of approximately 800 mangrove seedlings in the Kikokwe area.

The restoration activity brought together representatives from the local community, teachers, students from Jongowe School, and members of the Shehia Fisheries Committee. The initiative aimed to strengthen students’ capacity and awareness of environmental protection and conservation through practical, hands-on learning.

Through this experience, students gained a deeper understanding of the critical role mangroves play in protecting coastal ecosystems, supporting marine biodiversity, and addressing the impacts of climate change within their local environment.

As a key stakeholder in mangrove management and restoration on Tumbatu Island, Jongowe Development Foundation (JDF) continues to closely monitor restored mangrove sites by assessing seedling growth, identifying emerging challenges, and implementing appropriate measures to ensure healthy development and long-term sustainability.

🌿 Learning by doing for a sustainable environment.
🤝 Protecting mangrove habitats is a shared responsibility.

JDF Technical Team Visit to Uroa 🌊
On 27 December 2025, the Jongowe Development Foundation (JDF) technical team conducted a learning visit to Uroa to gain insights into community-led marine conservation initiatives implemented by local communities.
During the visit, the team:
 Explored coral restoration approaches using locally developed tools and techniques
 Learned how communities monitor, manage, and protect established community marine areas
 Discussed practical solutions for installing artificial corals in sandy seabed environments
 Observed firsthand the critical role of community engagement and awareness in preventing illegal fishing activities
The visit reinforced JDF’s commitment to supporting sustainable fisheries, effective marine resource management, and community empowerment to strengthen locally led marine conservation areas around the newly established Tumbatu Marine Conservation Area (TUMCA) - Zanzibar.
Together, we can safeguard our oceans for present and future

Strengthening Monitoring and Evaluation for Shehia Fisheries Committees

The Jongowe Development Foundation (JDF) successfully conducted a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) activity aimed at strengthening the performance, accountability, and effectiveness of Shehia Fisheries Committees (SFC).

The activity focused on follow-up support and capacity building on the use of the KOBO digital tool to enhance tracking, reporting, and documentation of committee activities in a more efficient, accurate, and reliable manner.

In addition, JDF introduced a new KOBO based digital fishers’ registration system designed to modernize the registration process, streamline data collection, and support informed planning and sustainable fisheries management.

During the engagement, fisheries committees highlighted several key challenges affecting their operations, including:
▪ Lack of identification cards for some fishers
▪ Limited awareness among fishers regarding the purpose and benefits of registration
▪ Low attendance and participation in group and community meetings

The session provided an important platform for openly discussing these challenges, enabling JDF to work closely with relevant stakeholders to strengthen participation, improve understanding, and enhance the overall performance of Shehia Fisheries Committees.

JDF remains committed to advancing digital solutions, strengthening community engagement, and promoting accountability as key pillars of sustainable fisheries management and community-led conservation.

Community Radio Program on Sustainable Fisheries Co-Management at TUMCA
The Jongowe Development Foundation (JDF) recently participated in an engaging community radio program aired on Tumbatu Community Radio FM, focusing on sustainable fisheries co-management, its significance, and the key challenges affecting its implementation around Tumbatu Marine Conservation Area.

The program brought together key stakeholders, including the JDF Executive Director, representatives from the Department of Fisheries Development under the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries, Zanzibar, and a Co-Management Program Advisor. Discussions emphasized the critical role of communities and fishers in the sustainable use and management of coastal and marine resources.

Community members actively participated by raising questions and sharing perspectives on issues such as fisher registration, the effectiveness of fisheries committees, compliance with fisheries regulations, and other challenges influencing successful co-management within the seascape. The panel provided clear, informative responses, contributing to increased public awareness and understanding of collaborative fisheries management in the Tumbatu area.

JDF continues to work closely with partners and local communities to promote inclusive, participatory, and sustainable fisheries management approaches that deliver long-term social, economic, and environmental benefits.

🤝🌍 Empowering communities to protect our marine spaces, today and for future generations.

JDF Conducts Workshop on Co-Management, Sustainable Fisheries, and Community Revenue Management

To promote the sustainable management of coastal and marine resources in Zanzibar, the Jongowe Development Foundation (JDF), in collaboration with Tumbatu Marine Conservation Areas (TUMCA) and with financial support from Blue Ventures, organized a workshop to address key issues and opportunities for the effective implementation of coastal and marine resource management by Shehia Fisheries Committees (SFCs) across the North Region of Unguja (North A and North B Districts).
During the workshop, it was emphasized that Shehas will continue to work closely with SFCs to strengthen enforcement and ensure effective co-management at the community level.
Key discussion areas included:
🔹 Operational challenges faced by SFCs
🔹 Strengthening SFC engagement at fish landing sites
🔹 Addressing illegal fishing practices and enhancing accountability mechanisms
🔹 Improving and implementing local marine management plans
🔹 Capacity-building for committees and communities on revenue collection and utilization
Participants also recommended:
✨ Continuous capacity-building for all stakeholders on best co-management practices
✨ Regular multi-stakeholder meetings to ensure coordination and joint decision-making
✨ Effective feedback mechanisms, including sharing outcomes with City Councils and relevant authorities
This workshop represents an important step toward strengthening co-management efforts, improving revenue management, and safeguarding coastal and marine resources for the benefit of fishers and future generations. 🌱🐠
🤝 We extend our sincere appreciation to all stakeholders for their valuable contributions.
