SHIJUWAZA is encouraged by the growing commitment among stakeholders who recognize the importance of inclusion and the integration of disability rights across their programmes and interventions. This positive shift demonstrates that sustainable development can only be achieved when every member of society, including persons with disabilities, is meaningfully included in decision-making processes and opportunities for growth.

We congratulate Barefoot College Zanzibar for taking a proactive step in partnering with SHIJUWAZA to strengthen disability inclusion within its initiatives.

Through this collaboration, we are fostering a shared vision of an inclusive Zanzibar where the rights, voices, and aspirations of persons with disabilities are respected, promoted, and reflected in all aspects of development.

Seaweed farming is one of the main livelihoods for many women in Zanzibar. Among our beneficiaries nearly 80% of the women are involved in seaweed farming which plays an important role in supporting their families and communities.

To increase the value of their work and create better income opportunities, we introduced a new initiative focused on transforming seaweed into value added products including handmade soap. Through this project, our Mamas are building skills, creating sustainable businesses and increasing their earnings from the resources they already have.

Teach them from a young age, so they grow up as changemakers and ambassadors for a better future.

This week, we welcomed a group of students from an international school in Kenya who visited our centre to learn about our work and the importance of climate action in protecting our planet.

Their visit was a powerful reminder that young people have an important role to play in creating sustainable solutions. Engaging with them early, we hope to inspire curiosity, responsibility and a commitment to becoming future leaders who will drive positive change in their communities.

Today we were honored to welcome a delegation of solar engineers and social development experts from Germany to our centre. Their visit provided an opportunity to learn more about our community led solar initiative and engage directly with our Solar Mamas whose work continues to transform lives through sustainable energy solutions.

We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with fellow practitioners committed to advancing sustainable development and empowering underserved communities.

For many rural women limited access to education and skills training has often restricted their opportunities to traditional caregiving roles within their families.

Barefoot Zanzibar is helping to change that by equipping women with the knowledge, confidence and skills needed to become leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers in their communities.

We believe that rural women are not just beneficiaries of development, they are innovators creating practical solutions for local challenges. Through their determination and creativity, they are transforming obstacles into opportunities and proving that some of the most impactful innovations begin at the grassroots level.
