Out in the Serengeti with the new trailer.

It means the team can stay out for a few days at a time now, rather than heading back in every night. Makes a big difference once you get further out.

Dogs travel in the vehicle as normal, trailer comes in behind. When they stop, it turns into a simple base. Kennels are set up so the dogs are safe, out of the insects, and not exposed to predators or snakes. They’re right there with the handlers.
There’s a bit of shade and somewhere for the team to rest.
We spend a lot of time thinking about the dogs, but it’s just as important to look after the guys doing the work. If they’re looked after, the whole thing runs better.
Simple bit of kit, but it helps.

We recycled the doors from old broken flight kennels and turned them into a solid vehicle carrier, thanks to some clever fundi work here in Tanzania. A proper make a plan job, practical, local, and built to last.

The DBs. Doberman, Bloodhound crosses.
They have the nose and stubborn determination of the bloodhound, but in a lighter frame that can handle the heat and long days in the bush. They work with ranger teams tracking poachers, following trails for kilometres, and finding snares along the way.

Hard working dogs, very sweet characters, and a real privilege to work with them.

Behind the scenes at the KURU dog school.

This shelf holds a good part of what keeps the dogs going. From putting up drips to sedation when needed, from treating snake bites to dealing with heat stroke, cuts, infections and parasites. In this environment you have to be ready for most things.

Supplies are not always easy to find when you suddenly need them in Africa, so we keep our own small veterinary store in the office. It is not glamorous, but it is part of keeping the dogs healthy, working, and able to do their job protecting wildlife.

Meet Thomas, the pointer, born and raised by us in Northern Tanzania, making us proud every day. This week, he helped find and remove more snares, protecting Africa's wildlife from indiscriminate killers. Our dogs are true heroes, assisting rangers in their crucial work.

Proper African engineering.
Angle iron frame, conveyor belt rubber, bolted tight. The rubber is sandwiched between two steel frames so it does not fray or pull loose. Simple, tough, built to last.
Our dogs have tried their best to wreck them and failed. They end up doing what they are meant to do, working hard, then climbing up and properly resting.

Nothing fancy. Solid, practical, made here, and the dogs love them.

Three photos that tell the truth.
A lion at ease in the wild.
Teeth and claws that were to be trafficked found by a dog
And our dogs out in the field, doing their job.
There is a growing trade in lion teeth and claws. ,parts taken. It is bleak.
Our dogs work with the rangers to interrupt that trade, on tracks, on roads, at airports. They give wildlife authorities a real chance to protect animals like this before it is too late.
It should not be necessary. But it is. And that is why we keep going.

All the best bits rolled into one, dogs, wild places, and people who care. Sometimes I have to stop for a moment and realise how lucky I am to be part of it.🐾
