The Environmental Management and Economic Development Organisation (EMEDO) was formed as a response to the environmental, social and economic challenges facing the Lake Victoria region. EMEDO’s goal is to ensure that the contribution of natural resources to the
national economic growth, poverty reduction and peoples’ livelihoods is improved on a sustainable basis through more democratic, open and transparent governance that benefits the communities.

EMEDO's Staff Capacity Building on Fire Safety and Emergency Response 💥

❤️‍🔥Today, EMEDO staff received Fire Safety and Firefighting Training conducted by the Mwanza Fire and Rescue Force. The training aimed at strengthening our knowledge and preparedness in preventing and responding to fire emergencies at the workplace and within our communities.

During the session, We have received both practical and theoretical knowledge on the:
🔥 Fire Triangle & classifications,
🧯 Different types of fires and appropriate firefighting methods,
🔌 Relationship between electrical equipment and fire outbreaks.

👨‍🚒 Also, We practiced on proper use of fire extinguishers, enabling Us to confidently respond to fire incidents during emergencies.

📞 The Fire and Rescue Force further emphasized the importance of reporting fire incidents as early as possible to minimize damage and save lives. Members of the public are encouraged to report fire emergencies immediately through the toll-free emergency number 114

EMEDO extends its sincere appreciation to the Mwanza Fire and Rescue Force for delivering this valuable training and looks forward to continued collaboration in promoting safety and disaster preparedness.

EMEDO Joins Environmental Stakeholders in Mwanza to advocate for Stronger Action Against Environmental Pollution🍃

As part of the Regional World Environment Day commemoration in Mwanza, joined more than 20 environmental stakeholders to raise awareness on environmental conservation, climate change, and sustainable waste management.

During the event, emphasized the need for stronger enforcement of environmental laws and regulations to address growing environmental pollution and protect natural resources for future generations.

The commemoration brought together stakeholders, government representatives, and community members, reaffirming that effective environmental protection requires collective action, public awareness, and accountable governance.

🌳Environmental Action Beyond World Environment Day

This initiative is not meant for celebrating World Environment Day only. As we plant trees, we send a powerful message to the world a symbol of awareness, courage, and commitment to taking action against the impacts of climate change. Together, we continue to protect and conserve our planet for future generations.

Today, , in partnership with the Environment Club of College, successfully carried out a tree-planting initiative. More than 30 trees were planted, with the active participation of over 40 people, making this a truly remarkable environmental event.

, We extend our appreciation to everyone who contributed their time, effort, and dedication to making this initiative a success. Every tree planted today represents hope for a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future.

Today, EMEDO continued to play it's role in addressing the challenges facing women involved in fish processing in lake Tanganyika through a meeting organized by the Kigoma RAS office. which brought together women fish processors, BMU leaders, Fisheries officers, Brokers, and the Regional Trade Officer with the aim of resolving the ongoing conflict between women fish processors and brokers.

The meeting began with women fish processors They complained that brokers deduct 4Kg from every sack of dagaa and also pay TZS 500 sold, a situation that limits their profit.

On the other hand, the brokers explained that these deductions are intended to compensate for the loss in dagaa weight that occurs during the drying process, claiming that the women processors usually sell the dagaa while still containing moisture.

After listening to both sides, stakeholders shared their opinions and questioned the legal legitimacy of the brokers and the regulations that allow them to operate in such a manner. and called on the government to establish a fair system that would benefit both sides.

At the end of the meeting, government leaders and stakeholders agreed on the following resolutions:

➡️The regional government will assess the legal legitimacy of the brokers.

➡️ Continues Follow up of the conflict.

➡️Fish processors should process dagaa according to the required quality standards.

➡️The use of online market opportunities.

➡️Another meeting will be organized in collaboration with TCCIA

This meeting resulted from the previous meeting held in April, where EMEDO brought together brokers and women fish processors to discuss these challenges, which eventually drew the attention of the government authorities.

Through this engagement, EMEDO has continued to demonstrate its commitment to improving the business environment for women fish processors and ensuring a fair, equal, and beneficial trading system for all stakeholders through the project focusing on advancing gender equity and strengthening women's capacity in the conservation of Lake Tanganyika's fisheries resources funded by

Tuzo hizi ambazo zimekuwa zikiendeshwa na TMA kwa miaka kadhaa sasa zinaingia katika sura mpya kupitia ushirikiano huu, sura inayoongeza msisitizo wa usalama majini k**a eneo muhimu la utoaji habari, hususan kwa nchi yetu yenye maziwa makubwa, mito, na pwani iliyojaa shughuli za uvuvi na usafiri.

Waandishi wa habari ni daraja muhimu kati ya taasisi na jamii. Kupitia kalamu, sauti, na kamera zao, taarifa sahihi husafiri hadi pembe za mbali kabisa za nchi yetu, taarifa zinazoweza kuokoa maisha, kupunguza athari za majanga, na kujenga jamii zinazotambua hatari za kuzama maji. 🎙️📺

When the people closest to the lake sit at the same table, the lake gets listened to.

On the 19th and 20th of May, EMEDO took part in the Multisectoral Stakeholders' Forum held at Malaika Hotel in Mwanza, as part of the inaugural Lake Victoria Day commemorations organised by the . 🌊

The forum brought together a powerful mix of voices: civil society, government, research institutions, utilities, youth and women's groups, fisherfolk, and development partners, all from across the East African Community Partner States that share the basin. Two days of honest conversation about where Lake Victoria stands today, what's threatening it, and what needs to change. 🤝

We talked about pollution, fisheries, climate, water safety, gender, livelihoods, and youth. And more importantly, we left with consolidated recommendations and shared priorities that will shape how this lake is managed going forward.

Because the truth is simple: Lake Victoria belongs to all of us, and protecting it is no one country's job. It's all of ours. 💙

Some moments stay with you long after the day ends. The morning we kicked off Lake Victoria Day with our hands in the soil is one of them.

On the morning of 18th May, EMEDO joined the Mwanza Regional Commissioner Hon. Said Mtanda and around 200 stakeholders and community members at the Butimba water project site for a symbolic lakeshore tree-planting exercise, the official launch of the first-ever Lake Victoria Day commemoration. 🌱

There was something deeply moving about watching neighbours, government leaders, partners, and young people kneeling together in the same soil, planting saplings that will outlive us all. Each tree felt like a small promise to the lake.

The Regional Commissioner left us with words worth carrying home: don't stop here. Make tree planting a way of life. And don't plant shade trees only. Plant fruit trees too, so the next generation can eat from what you've planted. 🌳

To everyone who showed up, dug in, and planted with us, asante sana. The lake remembers. 💚
