Majestic Culture Hub

Majestic Culture Hub The Majestic Culture Hub is an exciting proposition for a new lease on life for the Majestic Cinema in Stone Town.

The initiative seeks to restore the old cinema and create a unique and inclusive space for arts and community. The art deco gem located in Vuga; Stone Town is the last purpose-built cinema in Zanzibar that is still in use. It is run by Abdulhussein Marashi, whose family has been in charge of the cinema since the 1960s. Unfortunately, its current condition puts it at risk and actions need to be tak

en to save it from further deterioration. Busara Promotions, (Re)cleaim Women Space, Zanzibar International Film Festival and Hifadhi Zanzibar Ltd. Lead the campaign to restore the Majestic Cinema and Create a new and inclusive space for Zanzibar’s arts scene and community.

Yesterday we were very honoured to receive the grandson of the architect of Majestic Cinema, an emotional and historical visit. Dayaliji Pitamber Sanchania designed the building shortly after the original Majestic Cinema burned down in 1954, the new building was inaugurated by Sultan Sayyid Khalifa bin Haroub on the 20th of October 1955. Pitamber Sanchania had among others also designed administrative buildings and the Tree Shiv Shakti Mandi Hindu temple. Unfortunately his life was ended far too young due to a road accident in 1960.

Bhash Valambia, the grandson, could share already some additional historical facts and we are keen to work further with him to bring his grandfathers masterpiece back to life.
