Society and social understanding in Tanzania are changing fast. As this change moves forward there is an unrepresented, unattended group at the very base of the pyramid. People, who due to physical disability or other trauma, are not being included. These individuals have little or no means of subsistence, and there is no incentive to grow food or make other provision for them. After al
l, the huge majority of Tanzanians are small farmers and they are only just getting by. What of those, who for no reason of their own fall through the cracks. No farm, no livelihood, and a disability. Society discriminates against them, lacks the creativity to help them, and is slow to innovate on their behalf. WHO WE ARE:

PROJECTS
Shirikisha Tailors
The deaf and hard of hearing women together with other disadvantaged individuals, learn the art of design and production of smart items. They make items such as wallets, bags, cases, dresses, table mats and table runners, aprons and many others from local fabrics and recycled materials
Shirikisha Local Food Security Program
Youth learn to graft and bud fruit trees and in the process produce quality seedling for sale to individuals and institutions; conservation education and an awareness of local food production in reducing poverty and increasing local food security. Since been taken over by new management, Cocaya and her team have given the property a makeover in order to create a ‘home away from home’ for its guests. Most of them come from disadvantaged families and being part of SHIRIKISHA, Haria Hotel offers employment and support to these groups as a way of involving and empowering them

Since adding her own personal touch Cocaya and her team have successfully created a cozy, laidback vibe on the rooftop terrace, serving delectable cocktails and fresh food at more that reasonable prices. It’s the kind of place that everyone can enjoy in their own way, either chilling on the sofas reading a book, sipping on a juice, smoothie or cocktail, tucking in to a homemade feast or simply watching the sunset over Kilimanjaro in awe

SHIRIKISHA as you have read about from this page receives 70% of the total profits made by the hotel. Shirikisha tailoring workshop is in the same building as Haria Hotel. Guests are encouraged to support the local community in all sorts of ways such as purchasing SHIRIKISHA products, have a bag or dress handmade with your own personal touch

We are more than willing to suggest activities to keep you entertained in the local area and are able to organize safaris, Kilimanjaro climb, and hikes through the local forest, waterfalls and hot springs at a fraction of the price of tour operators. We can also recommend local tour companies for adventures further afield advising on prices and routes
