WICO, with support from the , continues implementing the Green Turtle Conservation Initiative at Mafia Island in close collaboration with community volunteers and the Mafia Island Marine Park. As part of this effort, volunteers are trained in practical field data collection skills and actively engaged in conservation activities.

Our ongoing activities include:

• Conducting beach patrols to assess the population and distribution of green turtles across nesting beaches.
• Monitoring nesting sites throughout the nesting season to document nesting activities and understand nesting trends. Vulnerable nests at risk of tidal flooding were carefully relocated to safer areas to improve egg survival.
• Recording key nesting data, including the number of nests, eggs laid, unhatched eggs, and hatchlings, to evaluate nesting success and strengthen future conservation efforts.

Through collaboration and community participation, we continue working together to protect green turtles and secure a safer future for these important marine species.

Looking back on March 2026 🌿

Women in Conservation Organization (WICO) was represented at the Women in Conservation Forum (WiCF) in Nairobi by our Founder, Eva Johnson Ayaro, as part of the Global Conservation Tech & Drone Forum.

The forum provided an important space for reflection on women’s leadership in conservation highlighting the need for stronger pathways into decision-making, access to tools, and sustained mentorship.

We had the opportunity to connect with conservation practitioners and collaborators across the region, and to learn from experienced leaders.

These engagements reinforced a clear direction for WICO: the need to create structured platforms that support women in conservation beyond visibility.

As a next step, we are exploring the possibility of hosting a Women in Conservation Forum in Tanzania, to strengthen local networks, capacity, and leadership pathways.

Today on World Wildlife Day 2026, WICO celebrate the theme:
“Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihoods.”

Medicinal and aromatic plants sustain our health, preserve cultural heritage and support livelihoods especially for rural women who safeguard indigenous knowledge.

At WICO, we believe protecting biodiversity means protecting traditions, medicine and future economic opportunities.

When we protect nature, we protect life. And when we empower women, we strengthen conservation.

🌱 From learning to action - this is what leadership looks like🌱

At Women in Conservation Organization (WICO), the Conservation Leadership Programme (CLP) has been more than a programme. It has been an umbrella, a wake-up call, and a foundation that pushed us to implement what we learned.

Through CLP training, mentorship, and the team project journey, we grew not only as individuals, but as a strong, united team. That unity gave us the confidence to move from ideas to action and to build something lasting together.

As a result of this journey, we proudly launched the WICO office on 20th December 2025, dedicating this milestone to CLP and the partners who believed in us from the beginning.

Wearing CLP t-shirts that day was our way of saying thank you to those who helped turn our dream into reality.

To us, CLP truly gave birth to a strong child ***WICO**** and we carry those values forward every day in our work.

🙏 With deep gratitude to:

🌿 Learning Together, On the Ground🌿

As part of the CLP Learning Exchange Program between Hajaniaina Rasoloarison and Eva Ayaro ,Our activities included:

1. Joint fieldwork in Mkingu Nature Forest Reserve.
2. Practical demonstrations of field methods and open discussions on improving conservation work.
3. A peer-learning visit to (CLP Alumni 2023) to exchange lessons from ongoing projects.
4. An exposure visit to Mikumi National Park, highlighting Tanzania’s rich wildlife and conservation value.

These moments created space for reflection, collaboration, and inspiration, strengthening long-term conservation partnerships across countries.

Investing in the young generation is key to lasting conservation. Through our Green Conservation Initiatives, we are building conservation knowledge and positive environmental behavior among primary school children—future stewards of our natural resources, especially in coastal communities where many become fishermen after Standard Seven. By instilling a sense of responsibility early, we aim to protect and sustain our marine ecosystem for generations to come.
