Islands have often been celebrated as laboratories of evolution. But the supposed “splendid isolation” of islands is only part of the story. Islands can also act as refuges for forms of life that have gone extinct elsewhere, respites for creatures that swim, raft and even walk to the landmasses. The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed annually on February 11th. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2015 and has been celebrated since 2016.

The day aims to recognize the critical role women and girls play in science and technology and to promote gender equality in these fields. The overall objective is to ensure that women and girls have equal access to education, training, and employment in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The day is an opportunity to raise awareness, celebrate the achievements of women in science, and to encourage more girls to pursue careers in STEM fields.
