🌊 A big shout-out to the AFAS Foundation!

We’re incredibly grateful that is once again supporting Under the Wave and our sea cucumber farming project in Kiwengwa, Zanzibar.

After helping us launch the farm together with this continued support allows us to further develop the project as part of our Women’s Empowerment Program.

Together with our marine biologists Yohanna and Casper and our Community Manager Mr. Makame, we’re building on everything we’ve learned so far, with one clear goal: creating a sustainable, long-term source of income for women in Kiwengwa.

For us, this project is about much more than sea cucumbers. It’s about empowering women, building knowledge, creating sustainable livelihoods and protecting our marine environment.

A huge thank you to AFAS Foundation for believing in our work and helping us create lasting impact. 💙

Better data. Better decisions. Stronger communities. 🌊

Together with Blue Ventures East Africa we are collecting landing profiling survey data to build a clearer picture of fisheries and livelihoods across Zanzibar.

A key goal is to understand what fishing really means for local livelihoods. Is the effort fishers put in equivalent to the catch they bring home? How often do they fish, and is it enough to make a living? Is the entire catch sold, or is part of it taken home for their families? And which fish are kept for food rather than sold?

These insights help us better understand the role of food security and nutrition within fisheries. At the same time, they allow us to identify opportunities to share knowledge about the nutritional value of different species and the importance of keeping nutritious food available within households.

We also want to understand the fishery itself: which species are being caught, which are most dominant, how catches change between seasons, and how much fishing effort is required to catch them. Over time, this can give us a much clearer picture of both the health of local fisheries and the people who depend on them.

But collecting data is only the beginning. Through validation and feedback sessions, we work to correct information, minimise errors and understand the challenges each community is facing.

Ultimately, the data becomes a practical tool for better decision making. It helps us plan our work for the coming years, work more effectively with local communities and develop solutions based on a deeper understanding of their livelihoods, food security and marine resources.

Because better solutions start with better understanding. 💙

🌊 El Niño is back. But what does that mean for Zanzibar?

Even though El Niño begins thousands of kilometres away in the Pacific, its effects can reach the Indian Ocean influencing ocean temperatures, rainfall and marine ecosystems.

For Zanzibar, these changes matter. 🌍 Warmer waters can put coral reefs under pressure, shifts in marine ecosystems can affect fisheries, and coastal communities may feel the impact on their livelihoods.

That’s why monitoring matters. 🪸🔎 By tracking reef health, marine biodiversity and changing ocean conditions, and by working closely with local communities, we can better understand what’s changing and build resilience for the future.

Because a changing ocean affects more than what lies beneath the surface. 💙

Together with Kym Rapier Foundation we were able to provide children in Zanzibar with backpacks and essential school supplies, helping them start their school journey with the tools they need to learn, grow, and dream. At Under the Wave, we believe that strong communities and a healthy environment go hand in hand. By investing in the next generation, we’re investing in a more sustainable future for Zanzibar.

Every week, volunteers from World Unite! join the Under the Wave team in the field, supporting us with essential data collection across several of our marine conservation projects. 🪸🐬

Together, we collect valuable data through our coral nursery, coral restoration monitoring, and Dolphin Behavioural Study. Their consistent support helps us better understand Zanzibar’s marine ecosystems and strengthens the long term monitoring behind our conservation work.
