🐢 Sea turtles are not tourist attractions.
They are wild, endangered animals that belong in the ocean.

In Zanzibar, the number of so called sea turtle aquariums has increased rapidly. Many of these facilities keep turtles in overcrowded pools with poor water quality and allow tourists to touch, feed, or swim with them, often while wearing sunscreen. This leads to stress, disease, and serious suffering.

As fewer sea turtles are being seen in the wild, the Zanzibar Government, through the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries, has taken action. Together with Under The Wave, the Ministry is in the final stage of developing official guidelines for sea turtle aquariums, focused on animal welfare and conservation. Stakeholder meetings will follow to ensure these guidelines are properly enforced.

🚨 Recent intervention:
An aquarium was found operating under very poor conditions. At the request of the government, Under The Wave assisted during the release process.
A total of 24 green sea turtles and one critically endangered hawksbill turtle were confiscated. All turtles were measured, photographed for identification, and released back into the ocean the same day.

This highlights why education, awareness, and strong regulation are essential. Protecting sea turtles means protecting the ocean.

💙 Together, government, NGOs, communities, and visitors can make a real difference.

We are currently looking for an intern who can start as soon as possible to join our team in Zanzibar. At the moment, many sea turtles are being kept in aquariums across the island, and our ongoing project focuses on developing and implementing guidelines to improve their welfare and management. This project is carried out in close collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy, offering a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in conservation policy and marine wildlife protection.

We prefer candidates with an academic background in marine biology, tropical ecology, sustainable development, conservation biology, or a related field, who are motivated to gain practical experience in marine conservation and wildlife management.
