We conducted learning visits among Forest Garden farmers to promote peer to peer learning and practical knowledge exchange.

During the visits, farmers observed different approaches to live fencing, crop integration, fruit tree management and timber establishment within the Forest Garden system. They also learned various planting techniques for crops such as groundnuts, sunflower, maize, cassava, sweet potatoes, pigeon peas, pineapples and mixed vegetables within one acre.

The exchange strengthened farmer motivation, encouraged patience and long term commitment toward their goals and increased confidence that the project is creating positive impact through diversified farming systems, environmental restoration and improved livelihoods.

We are continuing to strengthen the Forest Garden system by integrating beekeeping for biodiversity conservation, tree protection and sustainable livelihoods.

After learning about bee types, hive construction, wax application and apiary site selection, farmers have now started practical implementation. Together with farmer representatives, we selected suitable sites near seasonal water streams and successfully hung 7 out of 15 top bar hives. The implementation also followed guidance from the District Beekeeping Officer on appropriate hive locations and safety considerations for nearby people and livestock. The hives were suspended using wire and protected with grease to prevent ants from entering.

Our step by step training approach helps farmers gain practical skills in colony management, hive inspection and honey harvesting, ensuring they can continue independently beyond the project period.

An encouraging sign of progress is that farmers have already reported bees entering some of the hives, showing positive early results from the implementation.

Through this initiative, beekeeping is also serving as a tool for forest and tree conservation while creating future income opportunities for farmers.

This week we implemented practical knowledge gained from the Syntropic Agroforestry Training conducted in November 2025 at Sokoine University of Agriculture.

We established one 54 meter syntropic agroforestry line integrating food crops, fruit trees, timber species and soil-improving plants within one productive system.

Before planting, the trench was prepared five weeks in advance using organic manure, sawdust and topsoil to improve soil fertility, moisture retention and microbial activity.

In total, we planted 54 seedlings and 112 seeds, including moringa, pigeon pea, Gliricidia, avocado, sugar apple, sweet orange and other fruit and timber species. Mulching materials such as banana stems and sawdust were also applied to support healthy plant establishment and conserve soil moisture.

We continue learning, experimenting and adapting syntropic agroforestry practices to local conditions in Tanzania, while promoting regenerative agriculture and knowledge exchange within communities.

Last week we conducted the third Agribusiness training session with farmers as we continue building knowledge and sustainable income opportunities within the groups.

During the lesson, farmers learned:
1. The difference between business and entrepreneurship.
2. Key components of a good business idea.
3. How to develop and write business ideas based on each farmer’s interests.
4. Simple and effective ways of keeping business records for better planning and growth.

The session also emphasized the importance of collaboration and market access. Farmers selected their contact person representatives who will help in:
1. Networking with farmer other groups from different areas.
2. Sourcing quality seeds.
3. Strengthening market linkages and business opportunities.
4. Sharing information and coordinating activities among farmers themselves.

We believe that knowledge, organization and cooperation are powerful tools for transforming agriculture and improving livelihoods.

Last week, we were honored to host the Mwanga District Forest Officer and the District Beekeeping Officer during their visit to assess our project progress with the Kifaru and Kituri farmer groups.
They reviewed the ongoing nursery implementation for live fence species and fruit trees, and they acknowledged the good progress made made by farmers. They also guided us in identifying the correct, government-recognized areas for placing beehives after waxing, ensuring our installations comply with official safety and land-use requirements.
During the visit, we also transplanted Kigelia saplings to two farmers, strengthening our efforts to diversify species within the Forest Garden system.
We appreciate their recommendations and continued technical support in advancing sustainable agroforestry and beekeeping practices in our communities.
