Meet Irene, Mary, Upendo, and Salome.

We are proud to be members of the Donkey Care Club at Buhingu Primary School in Uvinza District, Kigoma Region. At just 9 to 13 years old, we joined the Animal Welfare Club in 2026. In our community, donkey mistreatment was common overloading, injuries, and neglect were part of everyday life.

In our community, the mistreatment of donkeys was a widespread issue. Donkeys were often subjected to overloading, injuries, and neglect, conditions that deeply concerned these young advocates. However, these challenges did not deter them; rather, they chose a different path guided by the belief that "change starts with one voice no matter how young."

Through our active participation in the Donkey Care Clubs, Irene, Mary, Upendo, and Salome transformed from learners to champions of working animal welfare. Our work included promoting the kind treatment of donkeys, raising awareness about rabies vaccinations, participating in tree planting initiatives to provide shade and feed, and courageously speaking up within our community and among our peers.

Our dedication serves as a powerful reminder that even the youngest members of society can effect positive change through passion and action. We are immensely proud of our commitment and the tangible impact we have made.

Through grant support from SPANA, Veritas - Tanzania is actively contributing to this long-term impact by educating children on working animals’ welfare. Our approach We Educate, We Care, and We Protect focuses on practical lessons about feeding, watering, handling, and recognizing signs of illness or distress in working animals. By empowering children with this knowledge, VERITAS helps build a future generation that values animal welfare, strengthens community livelihoods, and protects working animals for years to come.

During the long school holidays, Emmanuel Bharayinga chose a different path from rest and play, he became a young guardian and educator. As a beneficiary of the “Engaging Youth in Improving Working Animals’ Welfare Through Education” Emmanuel carried his lessons home from school. Throughout the break, he helped his family and neighbors treat their donkeys with greater care and respect, improving the welfare of the animals that support their rural livelihoods.

VERITAS has been using media platforms as an effective tool for working-animal welfare education and outreach. Through radio programs, community discussions, and awareness features, we have reached many rural communities that depend on donkeys and oxen for daily livelihoods.

These campaigns have helped increase understanding of humane handling, proper feeding, rest, and healthcare practices. As a result, more owners are recognizing the importance of protecting their working animals’ welfare, which also supports safer and more productive community work.

Following our recent education and training sessions, many groups of women have gained practical skills in caring for working animals and are now creating locally made equipment for their donkeys using affordable, community sourced materials. As a result, the donkeys are healthier, safer, and able to rest comfortably while enjoying time outdoors in the sun.

These outcomes demonstrate that education and local innovation are improving animal welfare in a sustainable and community-led way.

Recent trainings on improving the welfare of working animals have successfully brought together religious leaders and host community members. Faith leaders from churches and mosques actively participated in learning sessions on humane handling, proper feeding, and access to clean water for donkeys and oxen.

The trainings have created meaningful impact. Religious leaders have committed to continue this effort by encouraging their congregations and regularly visiting households and farms to promote better animal care.

These actions demonstrate growing collaboration between faith leaders and communities to strengthen the health and welfare of working animals.

Religious leaders play a critical role in shaping community attitudes and behaviors toward working animals. VERITAS engages pastors and Imams as strategic partners in promoting improved welfare standards through faith-based awareness activities conducted in churches and mosques.

Religious leaders deliver messages that emphasize compassion, stewardship, and humane treatment of donkeys and oxen, grounded in religious teachings. These messages are reinforced by practical demonstrations from the VERITAS team on proper harnessing and feeding. This approach strengthens community acceptance of improved welfare practices and contributes to better health, productivity, and overall wellbeing of working animals.

How Lady Freethinker Support is Making a Difference for Donkeys in Tanzania

In Tanzania, many hardworking donkeys once struggled daily to find clean water. Through the generous support of Lady Freethinker (LFT), VERITAS launched the Donkey Mobile Trough Emergency, bringing life-changing relief to these animals.

With strategically placed mobile troughs, donkeys now have regular access to safe drinking water reducing dehydration, boosting their strength, and improving their welfare. Healthier donkeys mean stronger communities, as families depend on them for farming and transport.

Thanks to Lady Freethinker’s compassion and partnership, countless donkeys are now thriving and every sip they take is a step toward a kinder, more sustainable future.

In Nyamidaho village, the UMAKI women’s group has turned a challenge into an opportunity through improved donkey care. With training from VERITAS, the 20 women learned to design padded, humane harnesses using affordable local materials. This new knowledge not only prevented painful wounds in their donkeys but also highlighted the connection between animal welfare and family income. Healthier donkeys meant more reliable work carrying water and produce without frequent breaks for treatment saving households time and money. For women like Amina, the difference was immediate: “Before the training, our donkeys often had wounds, and we spent money on treatment instead of selling our produce. Now, we make our own soft harnesses, and our donkeys work longer and healthier.”

The UMAKI women quickly expanded their vision beyond their own households. Recognizing the struggles faced by neighboring farmers, they began producing extra harnesses for sale at the local market. In just two months, they sold more than 150 harnesses, generating income that allowed them to purchase school supplies for their children and invest in small businesses. This initiative transformed the women into both entrepreneurs and community trainers, spreading knowledge of humane harnessing practices. As Fatuma expressed proudly,
“Our donkeys are our partners in life. Now we can care for them better while also supporting our families.”
