Good News For LAZAWO-Geita pack donkeys from Animal-Kind International

The Lazawo Donkey project is delighted to announce that we have been successful in our application for a funding grant from the animal welfare charity Animal-Kind International . From 123 grant applications we were lucky to be amongst the 15 projects selected to receive a 2026 animal welfare grant ( 8 in Africa and 7 in Latin America)

We had asked for the funds to enable us to run a project to develop a packsaddle to be used for donkeys working at the Mgusu mine. Over the next six months we will be developing this packsaddle which will be manufactured from locally available materials. The aim is to produce a packsaddle which protects the hard working donkeys and is well accepted by the donkey workers at Mgusu.

We are delighted to receive these funds and want to publicly thank Kind international for their support. We will post further updates on this project over the next few months

This week we say a sad goodbye to Dr Kagaruki. After working for the Lazawo Donkey project since April 2025 he has left us for a new role at Mbeya University of Science and Technology. We wish him well with his new job.

During his time based in Geita, Dr Kagaruki made a huge contribution to our work and we will miss him greatly.

Dr Kagaruki, all of the Lazawo team will miss your enthusiasm, hard work and professionalism.

HAPPY WORLD DONKEY DAY

On this World Donkey Day of 08 May 2026, celebrated in Mgusu, Geita, Tanzania In the Animal Aid Abroad – LAZAWO Working Donkeys Project,

Under Animal Aid Abroad support, we were able to conduct three days of pre-activities in preparation for celebrating this special day to honour the heavy work done by donkeys in supporting livelihoods within low-income African communities, while also raising awareness on proper and humane treatment of these special animals in order to prevent and eradicate cruelty.

The pre-activities included education sessions in primary schools, secondary schools, Medias (Star TV) and veterinary clinics.

Through AAA supports of transport, posters, veterinary supplies, banners, and other teaching materials, more than 5000 students were sensitised on the Five Freedoms of Animals, including the welfare of our hardworking donkeys, These activities were well received and remain an important investment towards positive change within working donkey communities.

On World Donkey Day, May 08, 2026, we also continued our veterinary clinic activities in Mgusu and celebrated together with donkey handlers and owners in Mgusu, Geita, alongside regional government authorities, while continuing to emphasise the Animal Welfare Act and the Five Freedoms of our working donkeys.

Lake Zone Animal Welfare Organisation (LAZAWO) thank Animal Aid Abroad for making this possible in Mgusu, Geita.

Happy World Donkey Day 🫏❤️

In Loving Memory of Emmanuel Peter Mollel

With heavy hearts, we remember our colleague and friend, Mollel, a dedicated paravet of Lake Zone Animal Welfare Organization, whose sudden passing last week on 14/4/2026 has left a deep void in our team and in the communities you served.

Mollel, you devoted your life to the welfare of working donkeys in Geita. Through your compassion, hard work, and commitment, you touched countless owners, relieved suffering, and helped save many donkeys whose lives depended on timely care.

Every wound you treated, every animal you comforted, and every community you served will remain part of your living legacy.

Your hands may rest, but the impact of your work will forever continue in every life you touched.

As the LAZAWO team, we also express heartfelt gratitude to Animal Aid Abroad for the support and solidarity in helping us lay our brother to his peaceful rest with dignity.

We will deeply miss you, Mollel, lovingly remembered and forever honored in our donkey welfare movement you also helped to build.

Rest well, Mollel. Your footprints remains intact.

LAZAWO Welfare Reward Program,Promoting Humane Donkey Care.

In March 2026, LAZAWO, with the generous support of Animal Aid Abroad, officially launched the Welfare Reward Scheme to recognize and encourage good donkey welfare practices among handlers and owners.

This initiative focuses on rewarding donkey owners/handlers who demonstrate excellent care, ensuring their working donkeys remain healthy, strong, and well-managed while continuing their important work.

During the launch, winners were selected from Mgusu Gold Mine and Stamico Gold Mine:
At Mgusu, three winners were awarded, one received an Animal Aid Abroad T-shirt as the best, and two received AAA hats.
At Stamico, two winners were recognized, one received a hat and one a T-shirt.

The LAZAWO team selected these winners based on the overall condition, health, and proper management of their donkeys.

WE Congratulate all winners for setting a strong example of responsible and humane donkey care!

We extend our sincere appreciation to Aid abroad under Janet Thomas, for supporting this important initiative.

Through this scheme, we aim to inspire more communities across Geita to adopt better welfare practices, because well-cared donkeys work better and live better.
