🌍✨ Clay Day – Building Hands, Hearts, and Horizons ✨🌍
On 8 June 2026, the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC) welcomed two young learners from the Sudanese community in Dar es Salaam 🇹🇿 for a paid half-day pottery session at the Industrial Minerals Application Department’s ceramics unit.

They didn’t just shape clay, they explored value addition through art, built practical skills, and connected cultures through creativity. Every touch of clay became a lesson in patience, resilience, and community empowerment.

This is more than pottery. It’s popularization of Geosciences, it is heritage shared, skills multiplied, and futures shaped

On 3rd June 2026, the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC) was pleased to welcome Mr. Alcides B. Manjate from Kulane Investimentos, LDA, Mozambique, for an official familiarization visit to explore the comprehensive range of specialized services offered by the Centre.
We are excited to announce that Mr. Manjate, along with two other professionals from his company, will be joining us for an intensive, 12-week Phase 1 Technical Training program running from July through September 2026. The continuous, on-demand training curriculum, tailored for Mozambican Professionals, will cover:
* Month 1 (Exploration, Geophysics & Drilling Logistics): Focused on QGIS applications for Mozambique (EPSG: 3036) , satellite imagery processing , target mapping , field structural geology , compass mapping , geochemical soil grids , field geophysics , and diamond core vs. RC drilling logistics.
* Month 2 (Small-Scale Processing, Heavy Plant Engineering & Blasting): Focused on Vat Leaching , CIL/CIP pad design , reagent titration , Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF) engineering , cyanide chemical destruction , plant dimensioning , crusher plate maintenance , and production blast-hole patterns.
* Month 3 (Clean Extraction, Fire Assay & Lab Engineering): Focused on sample preparation to control the "gold nugget effect" , gravity concentration pilot plant operation , CIP carbon adsorption , a Fire Assay Masterclass , and laboratory layout blueprint engineering.
Through this intensive attachment, the participants will gain practical knowledge and hands-on competency in utilizing advanced technical workflows to meet both academic and industrial requirements. This international collaboration with private sector partners demonstrates AMGC's ongoing commitment to strengthening human resource development, technical expertise, and capacity building within the mineral and geosciences sectors across the continen

The African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC) provides different capacity building trainings in an effort to assist in developing mineral resources and ensure prosperity in the African continent. Among the training provided are the Gemstone Identification and Value Addition Techniques and the Pottery and Ceramic Simple Technology courses to encourage Women-Youth Empowerment in small scale Gemstones Industry as well as in simple technology of Pottery-Ceramic Industry. We believe such initiation of small scale businesses (Cottage Industry) will contribute honourably in building skills, poverty eradication, raising living standards and eventually the GDP of African states.
The coverage of the two capacity building trainings to train trainers, whom will return to their countries to train others are as detailed below:
Training on Pottery and Ceramic Technology
· Introduction on pottery and ceramics
· Single raw material test
· Clay body formulation
· Glaze and decorations
· Kilns and firing
Training on Gemstone Identification and Value Addition Techniques
· Physical and optical properties of gemstones
· Working principles of gemmological tools and equipment
· Testing and identification of gemstones
· Rough gemstones sorting and grading
· Different techniques for value addition in gemstones
· Evaluation of cut gemstones
· Different treatments on gemstones
· Marketing plans and techniques for handling gemstones
· Techniques used in identifying synthetic stones and imitations in the gem market

The Pottery and Ceramic Technology training is delivered in a period of four weeks while the Gemstone Identification and Value Addition Techniques training is a three weeks program.

Mr. Ibrahim Shaddad, Director General of the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC), had the honour of being among the distinguished guests attending the opening ceremony of a new Karpinsky Geological Class in the United Republic of Tanzania. The ceremony took place on 18 May 2026 at 5:00 p.m. at the Russian House in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The programme featured a range of educational and outreach activities, including a presentation on the Karpinsky Institute, an expert lecture entitled “Modern Approaches in Geological Mapping,” a geological exhibition, and other events of professional and public interest.

The international project “Karpinsky Geological Classes” is named after Prof. Alexander Petrovich Karpinsky (26 December 1846 – 15 July 1936), a distinguished Russian and Soviet geologist and mineralogist who served as President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and subsequently the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, from 1917 to 1936. The initiative is led by the Karpinsky Institute — the All-Russian Geological Research Institute named after A. P. Karpinsky — operating under the Federal Agency for Mineral Resources of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation.

The Karpinsky Institute is the oldest and principal geological institution in the Russian Federation and occupies a distinguished position within the international geological community. Building on its longstanding tradition of international cooperation in geological research and mineral resource assessment, the Institute is implementing the international project “Karpinsky Geological Classes.” The initiative seeks to promote geology and strengthen both public and professional engagement in the Earth sciences through a broad range of educational and outreach activities. These include expert lectures, film screenings, thematic exhibitions, and interactive sessions designed to encourage dialogue, stimulate wider interest in geology, and facilitate the exchange of professional knowledge and expertise.

To date, Karpinsky Geological Classes have been established and are operating in several countries, including African nations such as the Republic of Ghana, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and the Republic of Mozambique, as well as the Republic of Cuba, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Republic of Belarus. The project has generated considerable interest among geologists, students, and academic institutions, reflecting a strong demand for knowledge exchange and the development of joint initiatives aimed at advancing geological sciences and strengthening human resource capacity within the sector.
