Railway Children Africa

Railway Children Africa We believe in a world where no child has to live on the streets.

Since 2010, Railway Children Africa has been working to transform the lives of street connected children in Tanzania. Thousands of vulnerable children struggle to survive on the streets of Tanzania every day, where they suffer abuse and exploitation. Many of these children pass through bus terminals as they flee abuse, conflict and poverty in search of a fresh start – but the dangers they face on

the street can be far worse than the problems they left behind. Working with families, communities, the transport sector, civil society and the government, we achieve life-changing outcomes for society's most vulnerable and at-risk children.

Railway Children Africa, in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania and with support from the UK Government , has officially launched a Social Welfare Services Desk in Arusha.

This milestone brings the total number of operational desks to 14 nationwide, reinforcing coordinated, accessible, and responsive social welfare support for vulnerable populations, particularly children, women, persons with disabilities, and individuals at risk during transit.

Located at key transport hubs, these desks serve as critical one-stop coordination points, strengthening local protection systems and improving service delivery at the local government levels.

The launch underscores a shared commitment to advancing social protection, safety and inclusive development in transport hubs across Tanzania.

Together, we are building safer journeys and stronger systems for those who need them most.

Happy International Day of Social Work!
Today, we celebrate and appreciate the incredible dedication of social workers, especially those working tirelessly in child protection. This year’s theme reminds us of the power of coming together to create meaningful change.
We’re proud to spotlight our very own Safeguarding and Technical Lead, as she shares her favorite part of being a social worker, serving, protecting, and making a lasting difference in the lives of children and communities.
“When I team up with frontline caseworkers to brainstorm and reflect on the most effective ways to support children and families. This goes beyond just a conversation for me; it signifies the realization that our efforts are shaping a brighter future for someone, which might have been different had we not intervened. It’s about enabling a child to pursue their life goals, empowering a parent or caregiver to evolve into a better version of themselves, and fostering a nurturing and secure family environment that everyone dreams of.” Mary, RCA

From Railway Children Africa, Tanzania to the world. We pull together for children and families. We are calling on the Tanzania Government to increased budget allocation to family strengthening programmes to ensure the availability of financial resources to support the ability of care givers (parents) to keep children in families. Yesterday, we had the privilege of hosting the FCDO Development Director in Tanzania for a field visit to the Social Welfare Service Desk at Magufuli Bus Terminal - one of 14 ‑supported Social Welfare Service Desks dedicated to improving safeguarding standards in transport hubs across Tanzania.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to engage directly with our key stakeholders who work tirelessly to protect children and vulnerable adults in these busy public spaces. We held meaningful discussions with members of the Social Welfare Service Desk Committee, including the Police Gender Desk Officer, Security Guard, Bus Terminal Manager, Social Welfare Officer, an officer from the Land Transport Regulatory Authority, and a Taxi Driver, among others.
These collaborations are essential in strengthening systems that prevent violence, exploitation, and abuse particularly in high‑traffic areas such as transport hubs.

We also had the honour of visiting the Ubungo Municipal Council, where we met with the District Medical Officer, District Social Welfare Officer, and other Social Welfare Officers to acknowledge the council’s leadership in the operation of the desk. We deeply appreciate their continued efforts, commitment, and partnership in safeguarding children.

Together, we remain committed to creating safer environments for children across Tanzania.
Protecting children is a shared responsibility. What role can communities and institutions play in making public spaces safer for children?

When we invest in youth mental health in Tanzania, we invest in safer communities, stronger families, and brighter futures. At Railway Children Africa, we provide trauma-informed mental health and psychosocial support to vulnerable youth in Tanzania.

Many of the young people we work with have experienced neglect, abuse, exploitation, or life on the streets. Without intervention, these experiences can lead to mental distress such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, mistrust and emotional withdrawal.

Through safe spaces, one-on-one counselling, peer support group, and youth empowerment programmes, we help young people build resilience, confidence, and hope for the future. By addressing mental health alongside life skills, safeguarding, and economic empowerment, we equip youth to make informed choices and thrive safely in their communities.

Family reintegration is at the heart of our care reform work in Tanzania. We work closely with children living on the streets, assess family situations, provide mediation, and offer continuous follow-up support to ensure safe and sustainable reunification.

Reintegration is not a one-time event; it is a carefully supported journey. We provide parenting guidance, economic strengthening support, and community monitoring to prevent re-separation.

Keeping families together protects children from exploitation, abuse, and long-term harm. Supporting family-based care solutions means investing in long-term change.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and limitless potential of girls and young women across Tanzania. But too many girls facing poverty, family separation, and street-connected life remain at risk of violence, exploitation, and early marriage.

At Railway Children Africa, we are changing that.....

Through education support, mentorship, life-skills training, and protection services, girls are gaining the confidence, safety, and opportunities they deserve to shape their futures.

This year’s theme “Give to Gain” reminds us that when we invest in girls, the impact multiplied.

Give support.
Give opportunity.
Give voice.

Because when girls thrive, families grow stronger and communities prosper. ChildProtection RailwayChildrenAfrica

Every step up Kilimanjaro can change a child’s life.

We are proud to announce that our very own People and Culture Manager will be participating in the Mount Kilimanjaro Trek 2026, together with our supporters and partners, all climbing for a cause.
When he climbs, he is not just reaching a summit, he is helping children leave the streets behind and step into safety, care, and opportunity.

Through the Social Welfare Service Desks (SWSD), more than 2,800 street-connected children in Tanzania have been supported and rescued between 2022–2025. But many more still need help.

Your contribution can make a difference.
It helps reconnect children with their families, education, and hope for a brighter future.

Family is where every child belongs. One of the key agendas of Care Leavers Tanzania is to raise awareness about the importance of family-based care because every child deserves to grow up in a safe, loving family environment.

During their AGM, they strongly reaffirmed their commitment to working with partners and communities to champion this cause and ensure raising of children in families is prioritized.

The Social Welfare Officer also emphasized that the government’s position is clear: family care is the first and preferred option for every child. That is why initiatives such as the Fit Family model were introduced, to strengthen family based as alternative care solutions.
- We believe change happens when we work together.
- Join the conversation.
- Be part of the movement.
- Advocate for family-based care.
Because every child deserves a family.
