Looking back at Day 2 of PHSC, there was an engaging session titled “The Role of the Private Health Sector in Advancing Universal Health Coverage(UHC): Quality Care, Innovation and Inclusive Access.”

The conversation opened with Dr. Heri Marwa, who emphasized that Universal Health Coverage must go beyond access—it must guarantee quality care for all.

As the session unfolded, Mr. Tumaniel Macha shared practical insights on health insurance, highlighting its critical role in protecting low-income populations from financial hardship while improving access to essential services.

Dr. David Mwenesano shed light on the efforts of NHIF to expand affordable healthcare coverage, while Dr. Harold Adamson offered a candid perspective on the challenges within private health insurance.

Overall, this discussion highlighted that achieving UHC requires collaboration, a fair environment, and shared commitment to quality, inclusive care.

Day 1 | Private Health Sector Stakeholders Conference (PHSC 2026)

Session Two: “Quality Improvement, business management and sustainability”

The session underscored the need to strengthen operational resilience to manage financial and internal challenges, alongside essential infrastructure upgrades such as reliable oxygen systems—both seen as prerequisites for sustainable expansion.

It further highlighted a shift toward patient-centred and market-oriented approaches, including community-led nutrition initiatives to improve service delivery and positioning facilities for medical tourism through stronger quality standards and specialized services. The introduction of advanced procedures, such as High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound, was noted as a key step in differentiating providers in specialized care.

Finally, emphasis was placed on enabling structures such as equity financing and public-private partnerships to support growth, complemented by digital integration and broader system strengthening to advance more equitable, efficient, and future-ready healthcare systems.
