This experience was the first time I truly witness the social inequalities that exist in society up close. I accompanied two doctors as they visited the homes of three elderly patients who were in difficult financial situations. Many of these patients could not afford the high costs of medical care, so the doctors provided home medical visits instead. The patients were all in very serious condition, yet the doctors still took the time to travel to their homes and treat them, often offering their services at little to no cost.
During the visits, I did not directly assist with the medical procedures and mostly observed from the side. However, this gave me a rare opportunity to talk with the patients family members. Many of them shared the challenges and pressures they face in their daily lives. Through these conversations, I gained a deeper understanding of the difficulties they experience while caring for their loved ones.
Even though I was just a stranger visiting their home for the first time, they were incredibly welcoming. Some even offered us food, which I found both surprising and deeply touching. While talking with them, I noticed how they rarely have opportunities to share their feelings with others. Because of this, when someone simply takes the time to listen, it seems to mean a lot to them. Their warmth and openness left a strong impression on me.
This experience also made me admire the doctors even more. They were not only providing medical treatment, but also showing compassion and dedication to people who might otherwise be overlooked in society today. Their actions reflected a deep sense of responsibility toward the community.
At the same time, what stayed with me the most was seeing the patients’ conditions firsthand. Many of them seemed to be enduring significant physical pain, and it was difficult to witness. It made me realize that for many elderly people, whether they are sick or not, what they need most is not only medical care, but also companionship and someone willing to listen. This experience helped me understand that healthcare is not just about treating illnesses, it is also about empathy, dignity, and human connection.
