The field of Global China Studies has become a growth industry in scholarship and journalism, in tandem with China’s outward expansion and engagement in all forms of power and influence. Two broad approaches are identifiable, with scholars focusing either on (1) grand strategy, elite discourses and aggregate tendencies or (2) granular dynamics of locality specific cases. This talk sums up what we have learned from the global China literature, and proposes moving beyond this bifurcation to pursue “extensions” to theory, comparison, connection and circulation.
Gender and the South China Miracle: Two Worlds of Factory Women(University of California Press, 1998)探討南中國在成為「世界工廠」初期,香港與深圳工廠體制下性別與勞動的組織方式;Against the Law: Labor Protests in China’s Rustbelt and Sunbelt(University of California Press, 2007)描繪中國工人階級在「一國」內兩個區域經濟中,經歷社會主義瓦解與資本主義興起的過程;The Specter of Global China: Politics, Labor, and Foreign Investment in Africa(University of Chicago Press, 2017)則追蹤中國國家資本前往尚比亞的軌跡,並比較其與非洲國家及勞工之間的關係,與全球私人資本的差異。
Ching Kwan Lee is a sociologist whose research focuses on global and comparative issues, including labor, political sociology, global development, decolonization, comparative ethnography, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Africa, and the global South.
She is the author of three multiple award-winning monographs on contemporary China, forming a trilogy on Chinese capitalism viewed through the lens of labor politics. Gender and the South China Miracle: Two Worlds of Factory Women (University of California Press, 1998) documents the organization of gender and work in factory regimes in Hong Kong and Shenzhen when South China first emerged as the “workshop of the world.” Against the Law: Labor Protests in China’s Rustbelt and Sunbelt (University of California Press, 2007) chronicles the unmaking and making of the Chinese working class in two regional economies undergoing, respectively, the death of socialism and the rise of capitalism within one country. The Specter of Global China: Politics, Labor, and Foreign Investment in Africa (University of Chicago Press, 2017) traces the movement of Chinese state capital to Zambia and compares its relationship with African states and labor to that of global private capital.
