1st Vice President-TTNNA
Region 4 Director- Caribbean Nurses Organization
I would like to wish a Happy International Nurses Day 2025 to all my colleagues!!
The International Council of Nurses has chosen the theme for 2025: Our Nurses: Our Future- Caring for Nurses Strengthens our economies..
This is so apt for Nursing personnel not only in Trinidad and Tobago but also in the Carribbean. Our nurses, novices, skilled, experienced, no experience, twenty years experience are migrating to greener pastures.
They are no longer paying taxes, nor contributing to the national economies. They are focusing their hearts and dreams to 1st world countries and building their futures on foreign soil!
I want to say a special "Thank you, to you, all of you, who have decided to remain and serve the citizens of our country, our brothers, our neighbors and our friends. It takes love of country to remain and work in some of the environments that we are employed. But by staying here, you are contributing to the economic stability of our beloved country. Nurses care for all citizens, persons who are also taxpayers, the breadwinners of their homes. Nurses by caring and treating patients and clients, are helping persons to return to their jobs to continue to contribute to society in various ways.
I urge our new government to invest in Nursing education, to hire all unemployed nursing personnel, to improve our work environment, to improve the purchasing power of the nurse by continuing collective bargaining with the Recognized Majority Union (TTNNA) to move salaries from its dormant 2013 state.
I look forward to the future when Nurses are treated as the Professionals they are. When Governments seek advice from the Nursing profession before making adverse decisions that negatively affect our profession.
When Nurses can access mortgages and loans independently. Invest in education for theirselves and their children. Are sponsored to pursue international programme's to become clinical specialists.
Increased investment into the Nursing profession and Nursing professionals will lead to increased revenue in the local economies from taxes, improve the stability of the National Insurance Bank, contribute to the incomes of small and large businesses.
I am looking forward to an improved Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean for Nursing personnel!!
Happy International Nurses Day 2025!
