Ghana’s parliament has officially passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill; tightening penalties and explicitly criminalizing advocacy and support for LGBTQ activities in the country.
The bill introduces severe legal sanctions, including up to three years imprisonment for engaging in same-sex relations and three to five years for the "funding, sponsorship, or promotion" of LGBTQ activities; coupled with a mandatory "duty to report" suspected violations to the authorities.
The bill which received overwhelming parliamentary support, now heads to President John Dramani Mahama to be signed into law.
