Sing J’ouvert (Street Show Band) presented by the Creative Collective Arts

Mission:
To use the medium of the Voice to pierce the consciousness of culture lovers during the carnival street celebrations. Description:
The band will present four roles or characters. They are the Chantwell (Singer), the Griot (Orator), the Minstrel (Musician) and the Jester (Dancer/Movement). The Griot, the Minstrel

and the Jester will perform in synergistic support of the Chantwell whose energy as the traditional King of Carnival will be the focus of the presentation. For theatrical impact, the formation of the band will be as follows: Jesters, Griots, Chantwells, Minstrels and Jesters. The purpose is to first get the attention of observers with the silent movement of Jesters. Following the oral tradition in Carnival, the Griots will pay obeisance to the Chantwells who will receive acoustic musical support from the Minstrels. Bringing up the rear will be an entourage of Jesters whose movements will be intended to encourage revellers to join the collective as dancers. Characters:

Chantwell Songbook:
The presentation will feature a selection of early calypsos that are recognized as standards. For its 2014 inaugural presentation Sing J’ouvert the Creative Collective will pay tribute to the late Sedley Joseph (the Penguin, died in 2013). In the course of its street presentation, Griots will “raise” a calypso by speaking/reciting, with poetic license, a line or verse of a calypso. The Chantwells will then perform selected verses of the song improvising as they feel inspired. First Announcement:
The first public announcement of Sing J’ouvert took place at LiveArt’s Poetry Session Saturday, January 18, 2014. At this introduction, the Facebook Profile of Sing J’ouvert was unveiled. Sing J’ouvert (Street Show Band) launch will join LiveArt’s 12th Poetry, Music & Open Mic session from 6-10pm this Saturday 8 Feb 2014 @ LiveArt Bistro, 5 Albion Street POS. Registration:
