Community Background
Couva North Gardens and Roystonia are two communities which have been developed for residential purposes, side by side, in the same geographical area officially entitled “Couva Central” by the Central Statistical Office. Roystonia, a much larger section of the community, continues to expand and perhaps is nearing the end of its developmental stage. Couva North Gardens was ful
ly developed and occupied by residents in 2007. The Community is located East of Perseverance/ Waterloo Main Road, west of the Southern Main Road, North of Couva Main Road/ Carli Bay Road and south of the Exchange Road, Couva. People of varying levels of education can be found throughout the community, with quite a number of them educated at the secondary, vocational and tertiary levels. Generally, the community comprises of working parents- the exception being a small percentage of retirees and children who are still attending school. To date, the only school in the community is an Early Childhood Care and Educational Centre, situated along Salacca Drive in Roystonia. However, there is access to schools on the fringes of the community – for example, Couva Anglican Primary School; Exchange RC School; Couva East Secondary; Holy Faith Convent, Couva, just to name a few. To its credit, the culture of the community is more or less a sample of the national culture. Religious practices and rituals are mainly along the lines of the Christian (Roman Catholic, Anglican, Pentecostal/ Evangelist), Hindu and Muslim faiths. The villagers, particularly the young, engage in the sports of cricket and football. During early hours of the morning you can find the young, not so young and the aged walking or jogging around the community.
