(Wednesday in the Fourteenth Week of Ordinary Time, Yr. C)

St. Augustine Zhao Rong, Priest and Companions, Martyrs (Memorial)

It was Joseph, as the man in authority over all the country,
who sold the grain to all comers.
(Genesis 42:6)

Remember Joseph’s brothers’ dislike of him?
Remember his coat of colours?

Let us think on the tenth commandment of God, i.e. the idolatry (Col. 3:5) of covetousness (Ex. 20:17).

Their jealousy was triggered by a desire, especially (but not exclusively) for, Joseph’s material possession; it was the visual representation of their father’s “favouritism” towards him.

Covetousness, usually associated with “cold-hearted worldliness,” masquerades as success and ambition, even in our time. Ultimately, Joseph’s brothers’ success in selling him into slavery achieved their ambition!

But, look at how the tables have turned.

So, as we search our hearts, may we ask, “Why do I covet what I covet?”

May our repentance be sincere acknowledgement that all who are jealous of what others have will not inherit the kingdom of God (Eph. 5:5),

Prayer: Dear God, Like Joseph, The Dreamer, let us, though hurt and betrayed, persevere in faith. Amen! St. Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions, Pray for us.

Reflection
They were harassed and dejected,
like sheep without a shepherd.
(Matthew 9:36)

It is easy to be harassed and dejected in the times in which we live.

Such calamity, confusion, and rumours of disasters and wars are forever disturbing our peace of mind and heart!

Misinformation and fake news have us forever second-guessing ourselves, as to what to believe and how to live our beliefs as baptized Catholics.

However, that can only happen when our focus shifts away from Our Creator God and His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, onto the things of this world.

After all, Jesus is Our Shepherd, we, His smelly, timid, dependent, sheep, who rely heavily on His voice to guide us, as we follow Him.

Yet, like typical sheep, our “follower-ship” is imperfect and fraught with many twists and turns, bumps and bruises.

Today, Lord, quiet my mind, cause us to hear Your voice, to listen to Your Word, and to follow You.

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, You are my Shepherd. Grant that I look to You, to lead me and guide me, lest harassment and dejection overtake me. Amen

The Nativity of St. John The Baptist (SOLEMNITY)
Reflection
What will this child turn out to be?
(Luke 1:66)
This is the perennial question which follows the birth of any child.
Parents are in awe, grandparents look on in wonder, while all others wait with baited breath.

Especially for loving, faithful, praying couples like Elizabeth and Zechariah, whose conception of a child is long-awaited, yet unexpectedly occurs in the couple’s mature years – for them, the answer to this question is so much more unfathomable.

Indeed, throughout the ages, the whole mystery of creation reverberates through
that question.

All anticipate the answer.
Only Creator God reveals it through the passage of time.

Moreover, where there is scepticism, like Zechariah’s, Elizabeth’s obedience in faith carries the day.

Despite the odds, Elizabeth’s heart-to-heart dedication to God is unwavering, Elizabeth also having previously acknowledged Jesus (in utero) as “Lord” and Mary as Mother (v. 43).

Elizabeth’s joy in God is complete. Whatever comes, this is her strength and consolation.

Prayer: Father Almighty, You make the impossible, possible. You ALONE ARE God: Omnipotent; Omniscient; Omnipresent; Omnibenevolent. Hallelujah! Praise Your Name. Amen

Reflection: If you love those who love you, what right have you to claim any credit? (Matthew 5:46)

Life and loving tend to be first experienced, and learnt, within our families.

Life and loving then extends outwards, to extended-family members, and significant others, who we meet in other social settings, such as church, school and work.

Thus, particularly among our loved ones and significant others, there is acknowledgement that there exists a core “wellspring of love” among “us” – constant and ever-flowing/healing and refreshing – a balm to all of life’s twists and turns.

In other words, we know who has the love and where the love is.

But, all others, not of our groupings, are kept at arm’s length - passively ignored or repulsed, or actively hated.

Throughout the ages, humankind has presented life and loving as membership of “in-groups” - exclusive to some, and jealously guarded against those of the “out-groups.”

But, this is not the love of Jesus.

All of God’s creation is the “in-group” of Jesus.

Prayer: Jesus, By the power of Your Holy Spirit, cause me to love ALL of God’s creation. Amen

(Tuesday in the Sixth Week of Easter, Yr. C)

Reflection: It is for your own good that I am going. (John 16:7)

When a beloved goes away, bids us good-bye, their leaving us fills our hearts with sorrow. We are being left behind.

Alone, adrift, hurt and puzzled, there are many questions asked about many things.

The immediate ones usually concern our chances of survival – how will I go on, without this person? What is my life going to be like without him, her or them?

Then, the “why” questions quickly follow – why do you have to go? Why do I have to stay? Why can I not come with you? Why is this happening to me?

Their departure from our lives, regardless of the circumstances, rarely seem beneficial to us. After all, how can absence, loss, or death, be of benefit to anyone?

But, Jesus says it is!

Leaving is a kind of detachment. It tends to provide space which may initially feel like a gaping wound, but which eventually heals, strengthens and directs in positive ways.

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit! Amen
