Kasımpaşa’da yer alan Piyalepaşa Bostanı, 400 yıla yakın bir tarih süresince etraftaki halk için geleneksel şehir bahçeciliği uygulamalarının ve bostan bitkilerinin (tohumların) korunmasını sağlamış, sıra dışı bir geçim kaynağı olmuş ve taze yerel gıdaya kolay erişim imkânı sunmuştur. Bugün Piyalepaşa bostanını küçük bir aile, tek gelir kaynağı olarak işletmekte. Dışarıdan yardım almaya güçleri yetmediği için, aile yaşlandıkça bostanı tek başlarına işlemeleri daha zor hale geliyor. Geçmişte bostan için plan, proje gibi önerildiğinde araştırmacılar ve ilgilenenler bir araya gelip son derece ender bu yeşil alanda geleneksel üretimin sürdürülmesinin en yüksek kullanım değeri olduğunu ileri sürdü. Hızla yapılaşmakta olan olan kentte bu gibi yeşil alanlar tek tek kaybolmakta. Bu alanlarla beraber geleneksel ve alternatif kent mesleklerinin korunması için mücadele edilmesi gerekiyor. Daha yüksek bir yaşam kalitesi için, mega kentte bile yerel ve taze ürünler tüketebilme ayrıcalığının yanında dinlenme ve farklı aktivite fırsatları sunan yeşil alanlar desteklenmelidir.
The Piyalepaşa Bostanı in Kasımpaşa is a historical garden that has preserved people’s livelihoods, unique, traditional urban farming methods, garden varieties (seeds), and access to immediately local fresh food, for at least 400 years. Today a small family grows various vegetables and fruits as their only source of income. As they are growing older it’s becoming increasingly difficult for them to sustain the gardens on their own, as they cannot afford extra help. In the past, when different purposes were proposed for this land researchers and citizens got together and made the point that remaining in traditional production was the highest value for this rare green space in such a densely built city. It is essential to fight for the preservation of green areas, as well as traditional and alternative urban professions, that are rapidly dying out. The privilege of being able to consume local, fresh produce in a mega city, as well as having green recreational areas in the neighbourhood, needs to be supported to sustain a high quality of life.
