Programs Brief
The International Resilience and Development (IRD) organization operates in a unique context, primarily focusing on providing humanitarian assistance to both refugee and host communities in Turkey. Their work is informed by the complex dynamics and challenges that arise from the presence of a significant refugee population, particularly Syrians who have fled their homeland due to th
e civil war. Syrian refugees in Turkey often arrive with traumatic experiences and loss, seeking safety and shelter within Turkish territory. Some reside in refugee camps, while others integrate into urban areas. They face daily challenges, including language barriers that hinder communication and integration, legal issues related to documentation, limited access to quality formal education, and difficulties in finding gainful employment. Turkey has granted these refugees temporary protection status, allowing them to stay in the country, but it does not guarantee a path to permanent resettlement.
This influx of refugees has not only impacted the refugee community but also the host community in Turkey. The host community, which has its own rich cultural heritage, has had to adjust to the introduction of new cultural elements brought by the refugees. The economic consequences of hosting a significant refugee population have led to increased competition for jobs, resources, and housing in some areas, affecting the socio-economic conditions of the host population. Efforts to promote social integration and cohesion between the host and refugee communities have been ongoing. These initiatives aim to foster intercultural understanding and address social tensions to create harmonious coexistence.
The Turkish government, international organizations, and NGOs play a crucial role in responding to the humanitarian needs of both refugees and the host community. This response includes providing healthcare services, educational programs, vocational training, and more. Turkey has also established a legal and policy framework to address the refugee crisis, including temporary protection and regulations related to refugee issues.
Geographically, the impact of hosting refugees varies, with some regions experiencing more significant demographic and socio-economic changes due to higher concentrations of refugees. Despite the challenges related to resources and socio-economic dynamics, hosting refugees also presents opportunities, such as a more diversified labor force, potential new markets, and the richness of cultural exchange. In this complex context, IRD has designed its six key programs to address the specific needs and challenges faced by both the refugee and host communities, aiming to enhance resilience and development while promoting social cohesion and well-being. These programs are tailored to the unique circumstances and challenges of the region, and they reflect IRD's commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of those affected by displacement and humanitarian crises. Youth Participation and Civic Engagement: Given the diverse backgrounds and experiences of young people within the refugee community, this program is crucial. It empowers youth to engage in civic activities, fostering leadership skills and a sense of belonging. By actively involving young people, IRD aims to bridge cultural gaps and promote social cohesion. Formal and Information Education: Access to quality education is often limited for refugee children and adults. This program directly addresses this challenge by improving educational opportunities. It provides information and resources to enhance learning experiences for both refugees and host community members, acknowledging the importance of education in integration and social harmony. Disaster Risk Reduction and Environment Protection: With environmental challenges and the risk of natural disasters in mind, this program aims to safeguard the well-being of both the refugee and host communities. By implementing measures to protect against environmental hazards and promoting sustainable practices, IRD contributes to the safety and resilience of these communities in an already complex environment. Civil Society Capacity Building: Recognizing the diverse cultural landscape and the presence of local civil society organizations, this program focuses on strengthening their capacity. This is particularly important in a context where diverse needs and issues must be addressed. Empowering local civil society organizations enables them to better serve their communities and advocate for change, promoting social cohesion. Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS): Given the traumatic experiences and emotional challenges faced by many refugees, this program plays a critical role in addressing their mental health and psychosocial needs. It offers counseling and support, acknowledging the importance of healing and well-being in the face of adversity and displacement. Training and Capacity Building for NGOs: NGOs are pivotal in the humanitarian response to the refugee crisis. In a context where local resources and infrastructure are stretched, NGOs play a vital role. By offering training and capacity building to NGOs, IRD contributes to the effectiveness of their efforts, allowing them to better serve the refugee and host communities and adapt to their unique challenges.
