Women’s participation in political leadership is essential for stronger, more inclusive governance and effective diplomacy.

Yet progress remains uneven.

Across Europe and Central Asia, women’s representation in parliament has increased over the past decade, but momentum is slowing before parity is reached. At the executive level, women remain significantly underrepresented—from near parity in some countries to no representation in others.

On the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, we recognize the women shaping policy, strengthening institutions, and advancing peace—and reaffirm the need for equal representation in all decision-making spaces.

Women need equal representation in decision-making at every level.

Olena Bilozerska has served in the Ukrainian Army for over 12 years - including as a platoon commander and sniper. At the start of the war in 2014, she was one of the few women to take on direct combat roles.

Like many women in Ukraine, she has had to make difficult choices about her life and future. After years of military service, she became a mother at the age of 46.

“I want the problem of Russian aggression to be resolved in our generation—so that my son will not have to fight.”

💧 Water is essential to life. But access to it remains unequal.

Across Europe and Central Asia, millions of women still lack safely managed drinking water. Water scarcity affects women's health, safety, time, livelihoods and opportunities, while deepening existing inequalities.

At the same time, women are leading practical solutions in their homes and communities. Their experiences, leadership and voices are critical to achieving sustainable water management for all.

In the lead-up to the High-Level Political Forum, we’re spotlighting stories across each under review. Read our explainer and learn why gender equality is key to solving the water crisis and achieving .

This Father’s Day, let’s celebrate dads who are reshaping fatherhood.

In the EU’s Eastern Partnership countries, Fathers’ Schools are empowering men to become more engaged, supportive, and equal partners at home.

The initiative is creating stronger families and opening new opportunities for women.

🏠 “We thought we were leaving for one week.”

On World Refugee Day, we highlight the story of Yulia Zenchenko, who fled Ukraine with her seven-year-old son in March 2022 believing they would be away from home for only a week.

Four years later, Yulia is the director and co-founder of Female Support Force, a women-led organization in Moldova supporting refugee women through legal aid, psychosocial services, employment counselling, and advocacy.

What began as an informal network has grown into a trusted organization that has supported more than 5,000 refugees and contributed to policies that improve access to education, employment, and social protection.

Yulia’s journey is a powerful reminder that refugee women are not only rebuilding their lives—they are leading change in their communities and shaping more inclusive responses for others.

On the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, we recognize the courage of survivors and reaffirm the importance of survivor-centred support, accountability, and justice.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, nearly three decades after the war, many women survivors of conflict-related sexual violence continue to live with the long-term physical, emotional, and socio-economic consequences of their experiences.

A pilot medical rehabilitation programme supported by UN Women, in partnership with Vive Žene and funded by the United Kingdom's Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI), is helping women survivors access specialized care while creating spaces where healing, dignity, and solidarity can flourish.

The experience has reinforced a critical lesson: quality, accessibility, privacy, and respect matter as much as the services themselves.

Survivors are not only rebuilding their own lives—they are leading organizations, advocating for rights, supporting one another, and strengthening their communities.

Read the full story and learn how survivor-led approaches are helping women heal and rebuild hope. 👉🏼 https://eca.unwomen.org/en/stories/feature-story/2026/06/how-medical-rehabilitation-is-helping-women-survivors-of-wartime-sexual-violence-in-bosnia-and-herzegovina-heal-and-rebuild-hope

Alisa Kovalenko is a Ukrainian documentary filmmaker, human rights advocate, and veteran, whose work captures the lived realities of war.

Following the full-scale invasion in 2022, she joined the armed forces and served in an assault unit. Alongside her military service, she continued documenting stories of conflict and survival - both behind the camera and on the front line.

As we approach the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, we recognize the importance of amplifying the voices and experiences of women affected by war, and the power of storytelling in advancing justice, accountability, and peace.

The should bring joy, not fear.

But for many, major sporting events also bring increased risk of violence at home.

Somewhere right now, a girl is watching her first match. ⚽

She deserves a game that sees her back.

Football’s biggest stage is a chance to show every woman and girl that she belongs.
