💙 Celebrating Deaf Culture and Community 🤟🏽

The Tonga National Deaf Association (TNDA) would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Australia in Tonga for their generous support and funding towards our Talanoa Toolkit through the Direct Aid Program.

Because of this support, we were able to successfully hold our first workshop focused on understanding and learning about Deaf culture. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together, share knowledge, learn from one another, and celebrate the unique identity, language, and experiences of our Deaf community.

We are truly grateful for the love, support, and commitment shown towards strengthening and empowering the Deaf community in Tonga. Your support helps us create more opportunities for Deaf people to be heard, understood, included, and valued.

⚠️ PUBLIC NOTICE – UNAUTHORISED USE AND ALTERATION OF TNDA PHOTO

The Tonga National Deaf Association (TNDA) has become aware of a social media post that is using a photograph originally published on the TNDA page and appears to have been altered and used without permission.

We would like to make it very clear that the photograph of Mrs. Saifoni Metui, TNDA Disability Officer and a proud member of the Alonga Centre-Tonga, has been misrepresented through the alteration of the original image.

Ms. Saifoni Metui has no involvement in, and does not endorse, support, or authorise the sale or activity being promoted in the altered post.

TNDA is deeply concerned that this image has been manipulated and used in a way that could mislead the public and negatively affect the reputation and integrity of an individual who serves our Deaf community.

We kindly ask everyone who has seen or received this post not to share or engage with the misleading content. We encourage you to report the post and the page to Facebook for unauthorised use and manipulation of the image.

We strongly condemn the misuse and alteration of photographs of our staff, members, and community without consent.

Please help us protect the reputation and dignity of our people.

​We are incredibly proud to have our representative, Saifoni Paongo Metui, attending the Fono Fakafonua 'A E Kakai Fefine (National Women's Forum) in Nuku’alofa this week!
​Running from July 8–10, this important forum brings together diverse voices from across the nation.

For TNDA, this is a vital opportunity to advocate for the rights, inclusion, and empowerment of Deaf women in Tonga, ensuring they have equal access and representation in all key national dialogues.

Today, TNDA successfully held our Policy Consultation Workshop, bringing together members of the Deaf community and key stakeholders to discuss issues that matter most to Deaf people in Tonga.

It was an exciting and eye-opening day filled with meaningful discussions, shared experiences, and valuable insights. The consultation provided an important opportunity for Deaf individuals to have their voices heard and to contribute to shaping policies that promote inclusion, accessibility, and equal opportunities.

We were inspired by the active participation, honest conversations, and strong commitment shown by everyone involved. Events like this remind us of the importance of working together to build a more inclusive Tonga where Deaf people can fully participate in all aspects of society.

A special thank you to Matelita Taufa for expertly guiding us through this session. Your knowledge, encouragement, and support helped create a welcoming environment where everyone felt comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences.

TNDA also extends its sincere appreciation to all participants, supporters, and partners who made this consultation possible.

🤟🇹🇴 Tongan Sign Language (TSL) Validation & Deaf Policy Consultation Facilitated by Matelita Taufa.

Tonga National Deaf Association (TNDA) successfully conducted the validation of Tongan Sign Language (TSL) and a Policy Consultation with our Deaf community and parents.

We would like to thank all Deaf adults, parents, family members, and supporters who participated and shared their valuable knowledge, experiences, and perspectives. Your contributions are helping to strengthen Tongan Sign Language and shape a policy that reflects the needs, rights, and aspirations of the Deaf community in Tonga.

This is an important step towards greater recognition of TSL, improved accessibility, and stronger inclusion of Deaf people in all aspects of society.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this meaningful consultation. Together, we continue to build a stronger future for the Deaf community in Tonga.
