Well the B-2 is a little modern for our usual fare around here, but it was too funny not to share. 😂

Meet Brisbane sisters and Precious collectors Ofa Takeifanga & Tisiola Kramer-Takeifanga, proud custodians of a rich family collection of traditional textiles from the Kingdom of Tonga called koloa fakatonga. The collection includes ta’ovala (body wraps), kiekie (decorative long waist bands), kafa (belts) and fans.

The sisters’ story began in Vava’u, where their mother was a revered weaver, dressmaker and embroiderer. As children, Ofa and Tisiola joined in collecting shells, seeds, palm leaves and coconuts, growing up to the cultural rhythm of steeping, pounding, dyeing, weaving, plaiting and knotting.

Today, their home in Brisbane houses an evolving collection which reflects family and community events over the decades.

Are you joining the 150th Anniversary of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Tonga this Saturday 25 October at King George Square?
✨ Don’t forget to head up to Level 3 at Museum of Brisbane to view the Takeifanga sisters' stunning koloa fakatonga collection, on display at Precious.

We open 7 days a week, 10am-5pm. FREE entry.

“My name is Tēvita. I’m thirteen and I’m a student. After the lockdown, I came to live with my grandma. My parents are at Tofoa because my father is a Wesleyan faifekau. He comes often to help and see us. In the future, I would like to be a minister like my Dad. I don’t feel homesick away from home because I’m here with my grandma. I help her to wash the dishes and do the laundry. I just like her a lot. She’s kind to me. I’d rather be here with her and live close to the ocean. I miss school but I like that we’re on lockdown. I think it’s the best way to help our people and protect us from the virus. It was just a bit boring having nothing to do today so I came here. I told my grandma I’ll come taumāta’u. It’s my first time. I just wanted to catch some fish for us. My grandma likes fish. I’ve been here for a while but I haven’t caught anything. If I catch nothing, I’ll probably go home. Maybe I’ll go get something from the store for us to eat.” - Manuka, Tonga

**Author’s note: Tevita’s grandma was featured yesterday although his story was recorded before his grandma’s.**
