For his second competition representing Tonga, Paula M***a competed at the Oceania Open 2026 in Mandurah, Australia.

Unlike the Oceania Championships, which are reserved for athletes from the region, the Oceania Open attracts competitors from around the world. Fresh from his bronze medal performance at the Oceania Championships, Paula faced strong opposition from athletes representing the UK, Indonesia, and Australia.

At just 20 years old, Paula competed in the Senior Men +100kg division and delivered an impressive performance to reach the final, securing a silver medal. Having previously represented New Zealand, Paula now lives in Canberra and continues to show great potential on the international stage for Tonga.

Now it’s family time until Mother’s Day in Canberra before returning to Japan. Paula will next represent Tonga at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 at the end of July.

It’s bronze for Tonga at the Oceania Judo Championships 2026! 🇹🇴🥉

Paula M***a claims bronze in the Senior Men +100kg division.
This marks Paula’s first time representing Tonga on the international stage, having previously represented New Zealand.
An exciting prospect for Tonga in the years to come, the 20-year-old was proudly supported by his family in the Melbourne MSAC Arena.

Only one athlete, Paula M***a (+100 Senior Men) for Tonga to fight on Sunday in the Oceania Championships. It is the first time Tonga participates in any Oceania IJF event since October 2019.
