Women Deliver 2026 may be over, but the momentum continues.
IPPF AWRO leaves energized by the power of collective action and global solidarity reminded that advancing SRHR and gender equality demands bold, locally driven, and inclusive solutions.
From youth-led spaces to high-level dialogues, voices from our region were clear: real change happens when those closest to the realities lead the way.
The Melbourne Declaration is a call to act, centering justice, care, and accountability. Now the focus shifts to delivery.
For us, that means doubling down: elevating youth leadership, strengthening feminist movements, and advancing rights-based change even in the most complex contexts.
The direction is clear. Feminist. Youth-centered. Rooted in justice.
And we’re moving forward. Women Deliver

At the Women Deliver 2026 Conference in Melbourne, IPPF AWRO convened a side event on “Advancing Global Action to End FGM: Medicalization, Emergencies, and Education” (29 April 2026).

Hosted by the IPPF Center of Excellence for the Elimination of FGM, implemented by AMPF in Mauritania and supported by IPPF AWRO, the session highlighted growing regional capacity to generate evidence, strengthen coordination, and advance community-led action to end FGM, including in humanitarian settings.

IPPF Director General Maria Antonieta Alcalde emphasized during her welcoming remarks the scale of the challenge, noting:

“My first official visit was to the Arab World Region, where I had the privilege of visiting Mauritania and the Center of Excellence on FGM. Looking at the global reality of more than 200 million women and girls affected by FGM, we must be more sophisticated and stay two steps ahead in our response. This requires a comprehensive approach. Ending FGM remains a priority area for IPPF.“

Session 1: Understanding and Addressing the Medicalization of FGM
Moderator: Lamia Grar, Architect of Cooperation, IPPF AWRO

Speakers:
Zeinabou Dioum, Coordinator, Center of Excellence for the Elimination of FGM
Dr. Christina Pallitto, Scientist, World Health Organization (WHO)
Kirigo Njenga, Senior Advocacy Officer, Orchid Project

Session 2: FGM in Humanitarian Emergencies

Moderator & Keynote Speaker: Dr. Rania Abdalla Abuelhassan, MA Support and Development Director, IPPF AWRO

Speakers:

Speakers: Leny Jakaria, Executive Director, Indonesian Planned Parenthood Association
Amal Ahmed Mohamed , Executive Director, Somaliland Family Health Association

At Women Deliver 2026 Conference, IPPF AWRO highlighted its leadership in advancing SRHR and ending FGM during a pre-conference lightning talk titled “Breaking Barriers: Bold Solutions Across Different Sectors and Stakeholders.”

The session emphasized moving beyond isolated medical responses toward coordinated, multi-sectoral action across healthcare, psychosocial support, awareness, advocacy, legal protection, and financial wellbeing.
Guided by the latest IMAP Statement on FGM, AWRO continues to support survivor-centered, zero-tolerance approaches to the medicalization of FGM across humanitarian and development settings.

As a panelist, Dr. Rania Abu Elhassan, MA Support and Development Director – Intervention, stated:

“Medical response alone is not enough. We cannot work in isolation—we must understand the key actors, social dynamics, and the influence of community and religious leaders. Real impact comes when advocacy, awareness, and services are connected. We need to connect before we implement.”
IPPF AWRO continues to advance community-informed action to end FGM and promote body autonomy.
