At the Women Deliver 2026 Conference in Melbourne, IPPF AWRO convened a side event on “Advancing Global Action to End FGM: Medicalization, Emergencies, and Education” (29 April 2026).
Hosted by the IPPF Center of Excellence for the Elimination of FGM, implemented by AMPF in Mauritania and supported by IPPF AWRO, the session highlighted growing regional capacity to generate evidence, strengthen coordination, and advance community-led action to end FGM, including in humanitarian settings.
IPPF Director General Maria Antonieta Alcalde emphasized during her welcoming remarks the scale of the challenge, noting:
“My first official visit was to the Arab World Region, where I had the privilege of visiting Mauritania and the Center of Excellence on FGM. Looking at the global reality of more than 200 million women and girls affected by FGM, we must be more sophisticated and stay two steps ahead in our response. This requires a comprehensive approach. Ending FGM remains a priority area for IPPF.“
