Six generations of custodians of Djerba’s traditional fishing heritage—the ancestral fixed fish traps known as Zarba —shared the same boat. The youngest children are still waiting for their turn; one day they will discover this centuries-old maritime world and, in time, choose their own path.
This was far more than a fishing trip. It was a journey through time, where knowledge, stories, and memories were shared across generations. It was also an opportunity to remember those who are no longer with us, by bringing their experience and wisdom back to life.
They may be gone, but their legacy and their footprints remain alive: in the sea, in our hearts, and in every palm frond that forms a Zarba, in every fishing site whose name has been passed down from one family to another, and from one skilled practitioner to the next. This is how this unique, environmentally friendly fishing tradition continues to endure, preserving both nature and the cultural identity of Djerba.
This tradition is a tribute to all those who have contributed to its sustainability and its transmission across generations.🌊
