📌What changed Jaime's life through the RHTO program?📌
Jaime, 22-years old from Labarai Village in Covalima Municipality, lives with a hearing and speech disability caused by illness he has six Years old. Living in a remote community with limited access to essential services severely affected his ability to communicate, speak, and hear. For many years, he lacked fundamental legal identity documents including a national ID card, voter card, and birth certificate,making it difficult to access basic services and social protection programs.
Recognizing the urgent need for inclusive services, RHTO collaborated with authorities in Covalima Municipality to help Jaime obtain his essential documents. This intervention broke through major accessibility barriers that people with disabilities face in remote areas. It also highlighted the critical need for sign language resources, which were not yet available to help individuals with hearing disabilities communicate safely and independently without relying on family members for tough language translation.
Today, Jaime can secure further documentation, access social protection programs, utilize health services, and receive government support. Furthermore, through sign language training
In Klibur Defisiénsia Tilun Timor Leste, Jaime now has the opportunity to continue his education through recurrent schooling and eventually pursue a university degree.
Jaime's story demonstrates the vital importance of RHTO's work in the municipality, helping people with disabilities secure their rights, gain community support, and ensure no one is left behind.
