Discovering Lampang: A Crossroads of Culture, Trade and Migration

Yesterday was the second day of the field visit with students from the Faculty of Tourism and Culture, Komazawa Women’s University, Tokyo.

Traveling from Chiang Mai to Lampang, the group explored the city through its morning market, urban neighborhoods, museums, historic sites, and everyday community life. Along the way, they learned about Lampang’s unique role as a crossroads of cultures, trade, religious exchange, and human movement.

The experience went beyond sightseeing. Students tasted local northern snacks and cuisine and had opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences of traditional beliefs and cultural practices.

Welcoming Our First University Study Group from Japan

Today, ZinMai Experiences of Tour Merng Tai had the pleasure of welcoming Prof. Zayar Honda and students from Komazawa Women’s University, Tokyo, Japan, on their first day in Thailand.

After welcoming the group at the airport, our team hosted a one-hour orientation session introducing ZinMai Experiences, our community-based tourism initiatives, and our work with local and migrant communities in Northern Thailand.

The group then began their Chiang Mai journey with our signature experience, “One Road, Many Stories,” exploring the diverse cultures, communities, migration histories, and living heritage along Charoen Prathet Road.
We are delighted to share Chiang Mai through the voices and stories of its communities, while creating meaningful opportunities for learning and cultural exchange.

Exploring New Collaboration Opportunities in Chiang Mai

Yesterday afternoon, the ZinMai Experiences team of Tour Merng Tai had a productive and friendly meeting with Professor Yuthasak Chatkaewnapano from the Department of Tourism, Faculty of Humanities, Chiang Mai University.

We introduced our work and initiatives in Northern Thailand. The discussion opened up exciting possibilities for future collaboration between the Department of Tourism and ZinMai Experiences.

We look forward to connecting education, research, communities, and responsible tourism to create meaningful impacts together.

Charoen Prathet Community Gathering | September 5
----------------
After months of listening, learning and connecting with people across the Charoen Prathet neighbourhood, with the support of the Jäger-Stolz Foundation, ZinMai Experiences of Tour Merng Tai is bringing community members together for a special gathering at Sacred Heart Cathedral.

This gathering will create a space for people from the neighbourhood’s diverse communities to meet one another, share experiences and strengthen connections across different backgrounds, faiths and generations.

As part of the gathering, our Community Outreach Team will also present key findings and stories from their months of community research and conversations.

Day 2 in Lampang
--------------
Our Day 2 inspection trip in Lampang continued with a closer look at the city’s vibrant everyday life, heritage and diverse communities.

We started the morning at the local market, surrounded by colorful fruits and vegetables, lively exchanges between vendors and customers, and the everyday rhythm of buying, selling and trading.

From there, we explored the historic Tamao neighbourhood, once closely connected to Lampang’s teak-trading era. Walking through its streets, we discovered heritage buildings including the former house and office associated with Louis T. Leonowens and Baan Sao Nak (House of Many Pillars), built and owned by Burmese teak trader Moung Chang Ong.

Our exploration also took us to Masjid Al-Falah, the largest mosque in Lampang, and Wat Sri Chum, a beautiful Burmese-style temple whose history is closely connected to the city’s Burmese teak-trading community.

Day 1 in Lampang: Tracing the Crossroads of Culture, Trade & Migration

Today marked Day 1 of the ZinMai Experiences team of Tour Merng Tai inspection trip to Lampang, as we continue developing a new tourism experience currently titled “Lampang: Crossroads of Culture, Trade and Migration.”

After a 1.5-hour journey from Chiang Mai, our first stop was the historic Nakhon Lampang Railway Station, built in 1915–1916 with the involvement of German engineers. More than a beautiful heritage building, the railway played an important role in connecting Lampang with other parts of Northern Thailand, facilitating the movement of people, goods and ideas, and contributing to the city’s development as a centre of trade and migration.

In the afternoon, we visited the Lampang Museum, where the team gained a broader understanding of the city’s history, communities and cultural development. We are especially grateful to the museum staff for kindly arranging an English-speaking guide to support our research and exploration.

We then paid our respects at the Lampang City Pillar Shrine, learning more about local beliefs, traditions and the spiritual foundations of the city.

Our final stop was the Dhanabadee Ceramic Museum, where we explored the story behind one of Thailand’s much-loved cultural icons—the chicken-patterned ceramic bowl. Its story also connects to the history of Chinese migration and entrepreneurship in Lampang, offering another fascinating example of how migration, trade and cultural exchange have shaped the city we see today.

From Community Research to the Making of Unique Experiences: One Road, Many Stories

Following our productive two-day Community Story Analysis & Tour Integration Session, ZinMai Experiences took the next step in turning community research into meaningful tourism experiences.

Yesterday, we hosted a full-day One Road, Many Stories workshop at Alliance Française Chiang Mai, bringing together the ZinMai Experiences team of Tour Merng Tai, the Thai Responsible Tourism Association - TRTA, Thai tourist guides, and community members from the Charoen Prathet neighbourhood.

Supported by the TUI Care Foundation, the workshop created a space for everyone involved to learn from one another, exchange perspectives, and explore how the diverse histories and lived experiences of Charoen Prathet can be respectfully integrated into our tourism storytelling.

The morning session began with an introduction to ZinMai Experiences, participant introductions, and an interactive icebreaking activity. Our workshop speaker Martin and Community Outreach Team then presented One Road, Many Stories, sharing the findings and stories gathered through our recent community research.

After lunch, the classroom moved on to real sightseeing.

During the afternoon, participants experienced the route together in real time by E-tuk-tuk, visiting key locations along Charoen Prathet Road and discussing how the stories, places, communities, and historical connections can come together as an engaging and authentic tourism experience.

Many thanks to everyone who participated with such enthusiasm, openness, and curiosity. And our appreciation to TUI Care Foundation for supporting this important process of connecting tourism, cultural diversity, and community voices.

From Community Voices to Meaningful Stories

On 7–8 August, ZinMai Experiences of Tour Merng Tai successfully completed a two-day Community Stories Analysis & Tour Integration Work Session as part of our Community Outreach Project, supported by the Jäger-Stolz Foundation.

Over the past months, our Community Outreach Volunteers—working across both One Road, Many Stories on Charoen Prathet Road and selected communities along One City, Many Stories—have conducted in-person interviews and field research with residents, community leaders, religious groups, local businesses, and other community members.

During these two days, we came together to review and analyze the rich qualitative information they gathered, identify key themes and community perspectives, and discuss how these voices can be responsibly transformed into meaningful outputs.

A big thank you to our Community Outreach Volunteers for their dedication throughout the field research and to everyone who contributed their time, knowledge, and perspectives to this process.

And our sincere appreciation to the Jäger-Stolz Foundation for supporting this important stage of ZinMai Experiences' community engagement journey.

Planning the Next Chapters for ZinMai Experiences

This Monday, the teams from the Thai Responsible Tourism Association - TRTA, Tour Merng Tai, and ZinMai Experiences came together for a productive strategic planning meeting to review our progress and align the directions ahead.

A key focus of the meeting was reflecting on the achievements, lessons learned, and ongoing implementation of the TUI Care Foundation's TUI Colourful Cultures Thailand Project. Together, we discussed how to build on the momentum of the first phase and identified priorities for the coming months to ensure the project continues to create meaningful impact for local communities in Northern Thailand.

Beyond project implementation, the meeting also explored several strategic directions for ZinMai Experiences, including:
▪️ Strengthening partnerships with regional and local tourism organisations and businesses.
▪️ Expanding the marketing and promotion of our signature experiences.
▪️ Developing unique tourism experiences across Northern Thailand.
▪️ Preparing for upcoming workshops, team trips and field visits.

We are excited for the next phase of our journey and look forward to sharing more updates in the months ahead.

Connecting Tourism with Social Impact at the Asia Region Anti-Trafficking Conference 2026

Over the past three days, the ZinMai Experiences team had the opportunity of participating as an exhibitor at the Asia Region Anti-Trafficking Conference (ARAT) 2026 in Chiang Mai.

The conference brought together social businesses, NGOs, government agencies, academics, and practitioners from across Asia and beyond to exchange knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and explore collaborative responses to human trafficking and modern slavery.

With the support of the TUI Care Foundation, ZinMai Experiences of Tour Merng Tai hosted a booth throughout the conference, where we introduced our initiative, our partnership project, and our signature cultural experiences to international, regional, and local participants.

Throughout the conference, we connected with new partners, shared our vision of tourism as a force for good, and exchanged ideas on how inclusive tourism initiatives can create meaningful opportunities for local communities in Northern Thailand.
