🪵 “Knowing what you truly like—especially when you discover it early—can completely change your life. It’s just like the Butterfly Effect.”
The Butterfly Effect is a concept that explains how small changes in the present can lead to massive, unexpected outcomes in the future.
Life works the same way. Many of our decisions open up different possibilities, and when we look back, we often find ourselves wondering, “How did I end up here?”
The story of “Little Mol” is one such example. Mol (Kant Tamsamsu), now a freelance photographer and professional woodworker, once described himself as “a hopeless student.” Most of his school days were spent playing football with friends rather than studying.
With a dream of becoming a national football player—shaped by limited experiences during early secondary school—and while still searching for his identity, classroom learning simply didn’t resonate with him, except for the subjects he genuinely enjoyed.
“I skipped classes a lot because I felt I was terrible at numbers. I was really bad at math. Even now, I still don’t know whether you divide by the bigger number or the smaller one first—I’m still confused,” he laughed.
“But I loved social studies and language classes. On days when we had social studies or Thai language, I never skipped school. I wanted to be there because I was good at those subjects.”
“Believe it or not, when I went to temple fairs as a kid, I never asked my dad to buy toys. I asked for posters of national flags or world maps. When I like something, I give it my all.”
Back then (around 2001), schools in Thailand began using a “grade-level promotion system,” allowing students to advance regardless of academic performance. Mol managed to survive until Grade 9, even while carrying a bag full of failed subjects.
“By Grade 9, I was at my lowest point. I thought I wouldn’t graduate, so I dropped out and went to work as a house painter with my dad in Padang Besar. Eventually, my Grade 8 homeroom teacher came to my house and convinced me to return to school and fix everything I had messed up.”
“That period felt like hell.”
It’s often said that when you haven’t yet found yourself, your decisions are filled with confusion and misdirection. After narrowly escaping the risk of dropping out of the education system, Mol faced another major decision: whether to pursue general education or vocational training.
“I kept telling myself I had to become a football player—no matter what—because I still hadn’t discovered art yet. I didn’t know whether to choose general or vocational education, so I chose vocational school just because I wanted to feel grown up.”
“I wanted long hair, long pants—without ever thinking that if I someday wanted to study architecture, it would be extremely difficult to get in.”
Life, however, didn’t follow the plan. A serious injury forced his dream of becoming a professional footballer to pause, opening up a period of reflection and redirection.
“After the injury during vocational school, I discovered books and photography. That’s when I truly found what I was interested in. I suddenly knew which direction my life should go and what faculty I wanted to study. From then on, I started teaching myself.”
“In vocational school, no one guided us. So I had to figure things out on my own—going to bookstores, traveling to book fairs, studying photographs. Back then, photography web boards were popular. I set my goal: this is what I want to study.”
“I remember wearing long pants to take the G*T/PAT exams, all by myself, while everyone else wore school uniforms. I thought to myself, ‘I really can’t mess this up.’”
“In the end, I got into journalism—because there was no math,” he laughed. “And most importantly, it had photography, which I loved.”
After graduating and holding a photography exhibition featuring ten years of work, Mol accidentally discovered another universe—woodworking, which later became his second profession.
“When I was preparing the exhibition, the only thing missing was photo frames. I wanted simple frames, but none were available. So I decided to make them myself.”
“Honestly, I didn’t invent anything. I learned by observing—watching foreign videos, asking older craftsmen how they did it.”
Through woodworking, Mol found a “magical moment”—similar to the feeling he had while developing film in the darkroom.
“Woodworking makes you calmer. It takes time at every step. When I can focus deeply on something, I feel happy—just like when I’m developing film.”
With his rare and specialized skills in Khon Kaen province, FILMGALONG has become a Learning Station for children, youth, and anyone interested in woodworking—a place to explore and discover what they love.
“I never imagined I’d be teaching anyone. I was a kid who had to learn everything on my own—photography, woodworking—because I didn’t know where to study.”
“If I had lived in Bangkok, it might’ve been easier. But in the provinces, you don’t know who to learn from.”
“When I started teaching, a thought would sometimes flash through my mind—if someone like this had existed when I was a kid, that child would’ve had a huge advantage. I would’ve had a huge advantage.”
“So I want to be the first piece of wood or the first step of the ladder—helping people discover the wider world of woodworking. I don’t expect them to become experts. Just one person who learns with me and turns it into a career—that alone makes it totally worth it.”
From a student who nearly fell out of the education system to the founder of a woodworking learning station, Mol’s story is like that of a senior butterfly, gently flapping its wings for younger butterflies who still can’t see their future possibilities.
All because of a small joy—watching children discover happiness amid the storm of confusion that comes with youth.

🪵 "การที่เรารู้ว่าตัวเราชอบอะไร ยิ่งรู้ตัวเร็ว มันเปลี่ยนชีวิตเราได้เลยนะ เหมือนกับทฤษฎีผีเสื้อขยับปีกเลยล่ะ"
ทฤษฎีผีเสื้อขยับปีกหรือ Butterfly Effect แนวคิดที่อธิบายว่าการเปลี่ยนแปลงเล็กน้อย ๆ ในปัจจุบัน จะส่งผลกระทบต่อผลลัพธ์ที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่จะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคต (อย่างที่เราเองก็คาดไม่ถึง)
ในชีวิตของเราก็เช่นกัน มีหลายครั้งที่การตัดสินใจของเรานำไปสู่ความเป็นไปได้ต่าง ๆ ของชีวิตในแบบที่ถ้าเราหันหลังกลับมามองช่วงเวลาที่ผ่านมา ก็อาจจะตั้งคำถามกับตัวเองว่า "เรามาถึงจุดนี้ได้ยังไงนะ"
การตัดสินใจของ "ด.ช.มอล" ก็เช่นกัน เมื่อย้อนกลับไปในวัยเด็กอีกครั้ง มอล (กานต์ ตำสำสู) ช่างภาพอิสระและช่างไม้อาชีพ นิยามชีวิตตัวเองว่าเป็น "นักเรียนที่ไม่เอาไหน" ช่วงเวลาในรั้วโรงเรียนส่วนใหญ่ถูกใช้ไปกับการเตะฟุตบอลกับเพื่อน
ด้วยความฝันที่อยากเป็นนักฟุตบอลทีมชาติจากขอบเขตประสบการณ์ที่มีอยู่อย่างจำกัดในวัยมัธยมต้น ประกอบกับการอยู่ในช่วงที่ยังค้นหา "ตัวตน" ยังไม่พบ ทำให้รู้สึกว่าการเรียนในห้องเรียนไม่ตอบโจทย์ชีวิต นอกเสียจากจะได้เรียนในวิชาที่ตัวเองชื่นชอบ
"เราเป็นนักเรียนที่โดดเรียนบ่อย เพราะรู้สึกว่าตัวเองเป็นคนที่ไม่เก่งตัวเลขเลย เราโง่คณิตศาสตร์มาก ทุกวันนี้เรายังไม่รู้เลยว่าการหารจะต้องเอาเลขเยอะหรือเลขน้อยขึ้นมาก่อน ตอนนี้ก็ยังสับสนอยู่เลย (หัวเราะ)"
"แต่เราสนใจวิชาสังคมและภาษา วันไหนที่มีวิชาสังคมหรือวิชาภาษาไทย จะไม่เคยโดดเรียนเลยสักครั้ง เข้าเรียนตลอด รู้สึกว่าอยากไปโรงเรียน เพราะว่าเราเก่งสิ่งนี้"
"เชื่อไหม ตอนเด็ก ๆ ไปเดินงานวัด ไม่เคยขอพ่อซื้อของเล่นเลย แต่ขอพ่อซื้อโปสเตอร์ธงชาติ โปสเตอร์แผนที่โลก เรารู้สึกว่าพอเราชอบอะไร เรารู้สึกว่าเราเต็มร้อยกับมัน"
ในช่วงนั้น (ปี พ.ศ. 2544) เป็นช่วงเวลาที่โรงเรียนเริ่มใช้ระบบ "ช่วงชั้นการศึกษา" ไม่ว่าเด็กนักเรียนคนนั้นจะมีผลการเรียนแบบใดก็สามารถเลื่อนระดับชั้นได้ เด็กชายมอลจึงใช้ "วิชาเอาตัวรอด" จนถึงมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 3 แม้ว่าจะพก 0 ร มผ มาเต็มกระเป๋า
"พอถึงช่วง ม.3 คือช่วงที่เรารู้สึกท้อแท้ที่สุด คิดกับตัวเองว่าคงไม่จบแล้ว จึงตัดสินใจลาออก ไปรับงานช่างทาสีกับพ่อที่ปาดังเบซาร์ สุดท้ายมีคุณครูประจำชั้น ม.2 มาหาที่บ้านเพื่อตามกลับไปเรียน แก้ทุกสิ่งที่เคยทำไว้"
"มันเหมือนเป็นช่วงเวลานรกของชีวิตเลยล่ะ"
ว่ากันว่าในช่วงเวลาที่ยังค้นหาตัวเองไม่พบ การตัดสินใจของเราจะเต็มไปด้วยความสับสนและผิดทิศผิดทางเป็นส่วนใหญ่ เมื่อผ่านพ้นสถานการณ์ "เสี่ยงหลุดออกจากระบบการศึกษา" ก็เข้าสู่ช่วงเวลาที่ต้องตัดสินใจครั้งสำคัญอีกครั้งว่าจะเรียนต่อสายสามัญหรือสายอาชีพ
"ตอนนั้นท่องกับตัวเองไว้ว่าจะต้องเป็นนักบอล ยังไงก็ต้องเป็นนักบอลให้ได้ เพราะยังไม่เจอสิ่งที่เรียกว่าศิลปะ เราไม่รู้เลยว่าจะต้องเรียนสายอาชีพหรือสายสามัญ ก็เลยไปเรียนสายอาชีพ เพียงเพราะว่าอยากเป็นผู้ใหญ่เฉย ๆ"
"อยากไว้ผมยาว อยากใส่กางเกงขายาว โดยที่ไม่ได้คิดเลยว่าหากวันนึงชอบสายสถาปัตย์ขึ้นมา จะสอบเข้าสถาปัตย์ยากมาก"
แต่เหตุการณ์ของชีวิตก็มักจะไม่เป็นดั่งใจ การบาดเจ็บครั้งใหญ่ทำให้ความฝันที่จะเป็นนักฟุตบอลอาชีพต้องถูกพักชั่วคราว ช่วงเวลาแห่งการทบทวนและตัดสินใจกลับเข้ามาทำงานอีกครั้ง
"หลังจากบาดเจ็บหนักจากการเตะฟุตบอลในช่วง ปวช. เป็นช่วงเวลาที่ได้พบกับหนังสือ ภาพถ่าย ได้เจอกับความสนใจของตัวเองจริง ๆ มันทำให้เรารู้เลยว่าชีวิตจะต้องเดินไปทางไหน เข้าคณะอะไร หลังจากนั้นก็เริ่มศึกษาด้วยตัวเอง"
"ด้วยความที่สายอาชีพไม่มีใครมาแนะแนวเราเลย เลยใช้วิธีขวนขวายด้วยตัวเอง ไปร้านหนังสือ นั่งรถไปงานหนังสือ ดูภาพถ่าย ยุคนั้นเป็นยุคที่มีเว็บบอร์ดภาพถ่าย ตั้งเป้าเอาไว้ว่าอยากเรียนแบบนี้"
"จำได้ว่าใส่กางเกงขายาวไปสอบ G*T PAT คนเดียว ในขณะที่เพื่อนคนอื่นทั้งห้องใส่ชุดนักเรียนมา คิดกับตัวเองในใจว่าไม่น่าพลาดเลย"
"แต่สุดท้ายได้เข้าวารสารศาสตร์ เพราะเป็นสายวิชาชีพที่ไม่มีคณิตศาสตร์ (หัวเราะ) และที่สำคัญมันมีภาพถ่ายที่เราชอบ"
หลังจากเรียนจบมหาวิทยาลัยและได้มีโอกาสจัดนิทรรศการภาพถ่าย (exhibition) ที่ตนเองถ่ายมาตลอด 10 ปี ทำให้ค้นพบกับจักรวาลของงานไม้โดยบังเอิญ อีกหนึ่งความสนใจเล็ก ๆ ก่อนที่จะเปิดประตูสู่ความเป็นไปได้ของอาชีพที่สองของชีวิต
"ตอนเอารูปไปจัดนิทรรศการ (ภาพฟิล์ม) สิ่งที่ขาดอย่างเดียวคือกรอบรูป อยากได้กรอบรูปเรียบ ๆ แต่มันไม่มีขาย เลยตัดสินใจหัดทำเอง เพื่อให้ได้กรอบรูปที่เราต้องการ"
"เอาจริงก็ไม่ได้คิดวิธีการเองหรอก มาจากครูพักลักจำทั้งนั้น ไปดูในคลิปของชาวต่างชาติบ้าง ไปศึกษาไปถามพี่ ๆ น้า ๆ ที่เขาเป็นช่างไม้บ้างว่าเขาทำกันยังไง"
เมื่อได้ท่องจักรวาลงานไม้โดยบังเอิญ ทำให้ครูมอลได้พบกับ "ช่วงเวลามหัศจรรย์" ที่งานไม้มอบให้กับเขาได้ คล้ายกับช่วงเวลาที่ได้อยู่ในสตูดิโอล้างฟิล์มภาพถ่ายที่เป็นอาชีพหลักของตนเอง
"งานไม้ทำให้คนใจเย็นลง เพราะว่ามันใช้เวลานานในการอยู่กับสิ่งนั้นในแต่ละขั้นตอน ด้วยนิสัยส่วนตัวคือการที่เราจดจ่ออยู่กับอะไรนาน ๆ เราจะมีความสุข คล้ายกับงานล้างฟิล์ม"
ด้วยความเชี่ยวชาญเฉพาะทางที่หาตัวจับได้ยากใน จ.ขอนแก่น FILMGALONG จึงกลายเป็นสถานีเรียนรู้ (Learning Station) สำหรับเด็ก เยาวชน และผู้คนที่สนใจในงานไม้ ให้มาลองเรียนรู้และค้นหาความชอบของตัวเอง
"ไม่เคยคิดมาก่อนว่าตัวเองจะได้มาสอนใคร เราเป็นเด็กที่ทำทุกอย่างจากการขวนขวายด้วยตัวเอง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นภาพถ่ายหรืองานไม้ เราไม่รู้จะไปเรียนกับใคร"
"ถ้าอยู่กรุงเทพอาจจะง่ายกว่านี้มาก แต่พอมาอยู่ต่างจังหวัดแล้วก็ไม่รู้จะไปเรียนกับใคร"
"พอวันนึงได้มาสอนคนอื่น มันจะมีแว้บนึงที่ผุดขึ้นมาว่า ถ้าสิ่งที่เราทำตรงนี้ มันมีใครสักคนทำอยู่ ณ ตอนนั้นในวันที่เราเป็นเด็ก เด็กคนนั้นน่าจะได้เปรียบกว่านี้ เราน่าจะได้เปรียบกว่าตอนนี้"
"เราเลยอยากเป็น ‘ไม้ท่อนแรก’ หรือ ‘บันไดขั้นแรก’ ที่พาเขาไปพบกับโลกของานไม้ที่กว้างกว่านี้ ไม่ได้คาดหวังว่าเรียนแล้วต้องเก่งไปเลย ขอแค่หนึ่งคนที่มาเรียนกับเราแล้วไปเป็นช่างไม้ สร้างอาชีพได้ แค่นี้แม่งคุ้มมาก ๆ เลยว่ะ"
จากเด็กนักเรียนคนหนึ่งที่เกือบหลุดออกจากระบบการศึกษาสู่สถานีเรียนรู้งานไม้ที่เปิดโอกาสให้ผู้คนมาค้นหาความชอบของตัวเอง เรื่องราวของครูมอลจึงเปรียบเสมือนกับ "ผีเสื้อรุ่นพี่" ที่คอยขยับปีก "ผีเสื้อรุ่นน้อง" ที่ยังมองไม่เห็นความเป็นไปได้ในชีวิต
เพียงเพราะความสุขเล็ก ๆ ที่ได้เห็นเด็ก ๆ ค้นพบความสุขของตนเองจากพายุความสับสนในวัยเยาว์
