Elisabeth Elliot
You can name another person’s sin with precision and still refuse to let Scripture name yours.
You can preach grace and answer a small inconvenience with a sharp tongue.
You can condemn rebellion in others and blindly defend it at your own table. That is hypocrisy.
And it is safest when you are sure it describes someone else.
Watch what you do when you are disappointed.
Do you deal with the wrong, or do you go after the person?
When someone tells you that your attitude is sinful, do you receive it, or do you begin the list of everything they have done?
The one who judges and does the same things condemns himself.
The people closest to you already know which version of you is real.
They have heard the tone you use when things don’t go your way. They know whether a mistake brings a patient word or an evening of drama.
They have watched you speak of the mercy of Christ and then live like a bitter fool.
Christian profession does not cover that in grace. It exposes falsehood.
Suffering is real. Injustice should be named. Help may be sought, but none of that permits contempt, slander, or a life of grumbling.
Those are not strengths. They are the sins you have practiced until they feel justified.
Christ did not cling to what was His. He emptied Himself. He became obedient to death, even death on a cross.
You have been shown mercy you did not earn and could not repay.
How, then, do you withhold it from others?
God is always at work in His people.
Work out your salvation with fear and trembling.
That means taking His commands seriously, including the ones aimed at the attitude you have spent years defending.
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” John 14:15
Do not hear the word only so you can aim it at others. Receive it.
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James 1:22
