IWAF Behind the Scenes | When Soundcheck Turns into Beatbox

It started as a perfectly normal soundcheck. Everyone was focused on the evening’s concert repertoire.

Then euphonium student Yuchen Hou suddenly stepped forward and dropped a beatbox performance.

There were two seconds of stunned silence—followed by the realization that… he was actually really good.

How many hidden talents do IWAF musicians have? Honestly, we have no idea. But somehow, the best performances are often the ones that never made it onto the program.

This year‘s competition celebrated the creativity and innovation of composers from around the world. We are deeply grateful to all of our applicants and especially to our three outstanding finalists, whose works were brought to life by the IWAF Wind Ensemble during our Opening Concert.

Congratulations once again to Atiran, and thank you to every composer who shared your music and imagination with us. Your voices are shaping the future of wind ensemble music.

There is a moment when a festival stops being a collection of individuals and becomes an orchestra.

For IWAF 2026, this was that moment.

Students and faculty from around the world came together on one stage, performing music that was written in different countries, shaped by different cultures, and brought to life through a shared artistic language. In a world where borders often define us, music continues to remind us what we have in common.

This concert was not simply a performance—it was the first chapter of a journey. A celebration of collaboration, curiosity, and the belief that the future of classical music belongs to a truly global community.

To every student who trusted the process, every faculty member who inspired the next generation, every partner who believed in this vision, and every audience member who shared this evening with us—thank you.

This is why IWAF exists.

Pulse of a New Era – Opening Ceremony of the 2026 IWAF International Wind Ensemble Academy & Festival and the 2026 APEC China Year Asia-Pacific Youth Music Creation Concert, a key public welfare art project under the 2026 APEC China Year, was successfully held at Shenzhen Hong Kong Pui Kiu College Longhua Xinyi School on the evening of July 20.
