Started in Thailand, not a party of the 1951 Convention, we try to create opportunities for refugees to make their life more enjoyable. Thailand is not party to the 1951 Refugee Convention or its 1967 Protocol. This means that Thailand does not recognize refugees as having any special status under its domestic laws. The UNHCR estimates approximately 1300 urban refugees (those already accepted as r
efugees) and around 700 urban asylum seekers (those waiting for refugee status) in Bangkok. Urban refugees in Bangkok come primarily from Laos, Sri Lanka, China, Somalia, Iraq, Cambodia, Nepal, Vietnam, Democratic Republic of Congo, Palestine, Ivory Coast, Iran and Pakistan [1]. This project, initiated by young professionals temporarily living in Bangkok, aims to help urban refugee families get access to education for their children. We wish to integrate refugee families into Bangkok by giving them opportunities and responsibilities in the community. Our main tool for doing this is our network of contacts and friends. Be a part of this project by offering what you already do: Talk to your friends! Contact us at [email protected] and participate by sharing your ideas.
