Although the attached message was used in a Phang Nga province wide campaign last year, it is certainly still relevant today as we experience burning of general household rubbish and the cleaning of sites preparing for development.
The message in Thai: This is an official public warning from the Governor of Phang Nga Province, Thailand, calling for an immediate and complete ban on open burning (field burning, agricultural waste burning, etc.) across the entire province due to severe air pollution/smoke problems. The strong message is: “Stop burning. Stop the smoke. For all of us.”
There are alternatives but they take a bit more effort. Perhaps ‘burners’ can let us know what the community can do to help them overcome this practice?
PM2.5 is one of the most harmful air pollutants because of how deeply it invades the body.
Health Impacts:
Short-term exposure: Causes coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, irritated eyes, aggravated asthma, and increased risk of heart attacks or strokes.
Long-term exposure: Leads to reduced lung function, chronic bronchitis, COPD, heart disease, lung cancer, and higher overall mortality.
t can also affect pregnancy (low birth weight, preterm birth) and is linked to diabetes and possible cognitive issues.
Key point: PM2.5 is especially dangerous because the tiny particles enter deep into the lungs and bloodstream, triggering inflammation throughout the body. There is no safe level — the lower the exposure, the better.
Who is most at risk from PM2.5:
Children & infants — developing lungs, breathe faster, movulnerable to long-term effects.
Elderly people — weaker respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
People with existing conditions — asthma, COPD, heart disease, diabetes (highest risk of attacks or worsening symptoms).
Pregnant women — increased risk of preterm birth and low birth weight.
