Since last week, our team has been doing maintenance on our caravan. Soon it'll be ready to bring help, hope and healing to the isolated communities of Chad.

After delivering Bibles for our partner, Églises Évangéliques au Tchad, to Abéché at the beginning of this week, pilot Joost Gerritsen arrived back in N'Djamena just on time before a powerful storm.

As we continue to celebrate 60 years of MAF Chad , we revisit a pivotal moment in 1985.
Following poor rainfall in the 1980s and failing rice crops, a famine was about to engulf the people of Chad.
Thousands of people had left their homes in search of food. Unless urgent action was taken, 30,000 villagers who MAF served would die of starvation: https://f.mtr.cool/drqofjsndx

MAF flies humanitarian workers to the Lake Chad region to provide essential assistance to host communities and internally displaced persons, including non-food items, hygiene kits, emergency shelters, latrines, and water boreholes.
This region is one of the most dangerous spots in Chad, ravaged by Boko Haram. Although the extremist group was started in northern Nigeria, Boko Haram has expanded into Lake Chad region, spanning northeastern Nigeria, northern Cameroon, Chad, and southeastern Niger leading to the displacement and deaths of many people.
Families have been forced to flee their homes, and access to schools, healthcare, and food has become more difficult.
Right now, MAF is the only air transportation to the Lake Chad region. The journey by road is very uncertain as it poses security threats. Travelling with MAF significantly facilitates their work by speeding up the deployment of staff to operational areas. This reduces exposure to security risks on the road and lightens the logistical burden of moving between locations.

Following drone strikes that left many wounded and hospitals overwhelmed, Chad’s already fragile health system has been pushed to the wall. MAF has been able to assist by transporting medical cargo to eastern Chad, where large numbers of Sudanese refugees are living.
Without these supplies it would have been impossible to treat the wounded. Road transportation over the 1000 km from N’Djamena to Iriba is extremely time-consuming.
MAF’s Country director in Chad, Esmara, was humbled that MAF was able to be part of providing solutions to those suffering in Sudan.
“It was amazing to see how we could get all the seats out the Caravan and fill all the space with the much-needed medical supplies,” she said. “We are grateful that we could contribute—in a very small way—to the ongoing humanitarian crisis by flying these life-giving medical supplies.”

🤔Did you know that the journey of MAF in Chad began in 1966, supported by a small Cessna 185 amphibian plane?
Its initial purpose was to support medical outreach and community development near Lake Chad.
As we celebrate 60 years of service in Chad, we remember how far we've come, and we look forward to many more years of bringing help, hope and healing to the remote communities of Chad.❤❤

Imagine having to endure a 3-day road journey just to reach the people you're serving...?
That's the reality for Association pour le Développement et la Paix (ADP) working in the remote regions of North Chad. In Gouro, their work promotes education in the local language, Dazaga, which significantly improves student understanding and engagement.
Gouro is tacked deep in the Sahara Desert, where access is a gruelling 3-day car ride through sandy, dangerous terrain, if you're lucky enough to avoid armed robberies.
Travelling with MAF makes all the difference because they are able to fly there in just 4 hours. This not only saves time but ensures safety and allows them to be present more regularly, making their development efforts more effective.
Recently, they visited three schools and assessing their needs. These schools face enormous challenges: limited infrastructure, scarce water and sanitation facilities, and a severe shortage of qualified teachers.

When birth pains struck, Aziza Hassan Djogoye was in the small village of Tiné Djagaraba, bordering Sudan. There’s no signal out here. There are no proper roads.
She was taken 35 km to the nearest health centre, but complications occurred and a caesarean section was carried out to deliver her baby.
A week later, Aziza’s health was not improving. After examination, it was found that there was a lot of blood in her abdomen, requiring a second operation.
It wasn’t successful. Aziza’s condition continued to deteriorate.
It was decided to evacuate her to the nearest district, Abeché, 315 km away by ambulance. The journey took about 12 hours.
After examination, Aziza and her family were told that the first two surgeries were unsuccessful because they had punctured the bladder, and even blocked the canal of a kidney. Aziza needed urgent surgery in the capital city, N’Djamena.
At this point, Aziza didn’t have any choice. For someone this sick, road travel was no longer an option. She was saved by an MAF flight of just two and half hours.
