On 9 September, education stakeholders came together for the second Local Education Group (LEG) Consultation of the GPE Eswatini Mission to explore this question and strengthen the pathway towards effective implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE).

Discussions focused on priority reforms, financing, sustainability, equity and inclusion, and the practical steps needed to translate CBE ambitions into results for learners.

We were pleased to welcome Global Partnership for Education (GPE) representatives Samuel Yohannes, Belay Addise and Daisuke Kanazana, whose engagement is strengthening dialogue and collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training, UNICEF and other education partners.

When we work together, we can build an education system that is more effective, equitable and inclusive—and puts every learner on a stronger path to succeed.

UNICEF and the Ministry of Health reviewed progress on initiatives supported by the Government of Japan and UNICEF to help ensure that vulnerable children, adolescents and families can access essential health care, nutritious food, safe water and sanitation, and protection from violence.
The review highlighted encouraging progress, while also identifying bottlenecks that need to be addressed to accelerate results.
A key achievement is the development of an online monitoring and reporting tool by the Health Promotion Eswatini, with technical support from UNICEF. The tool will enable real-time reporting and help strengthen the use of data to improve planning, decision-making and service delivery.
Together, UNICEF, the Ministry of Health and the Government of Japan are working to strengthen systems and services so that every child can survive, thrive and be protected.

UNICEF Eswatini is proud to support a three-day training on Child-Sensitive Social Protection Systems, taking place from 2–4 September 2026.
The training brings together government officials to strengthen their understanding of how social protection can help reduce poverty and inequality and protect children and vulnerable families including during times of crisis.
Participants are exploring what it takes to build effective social protection systems, from the policies, laws and institutions that underpin them, to identifying who needs support, designing appropriate benefits and connecting families to essential services.
A key focus is on “cash plus” approaches, which go beyond cash transfers by linking families with services that can improve children’s well-being and development.
Participants will also put their learning into practice by designing a child grant programme from the ground up, thinking through how it would reach and support children across Eswatini and presenting their ideas to peers.
Investing in child-sensitive social protection means investing in stronger families, more resilient communities and a brighter future for every child.

Today, the Honourable Minister of Education and Training, Mr Owen Nxumalo, officially received the Final Report of the Education, Training and Skills Development Committee (ETSDC) the result of two years of national consultations involving government, educators, learners, traditional leaders, the private sector and communities across Eswatini.
What makes this milestone especially important? The report goes beyond identifying challenges. It includes a fully costed Operational Plan with clear timelines, responsibilities and budgets to help turn recommendations into action.
UNICEF Eswatini was pleased to provide technical support in costing the Operational Plan, helping strengthen its credibility and provide Government with a practical roadmap for education reform from early childhood care and education through TVET and higher education.
The reforms aim to advance quality, equity and inclusion, ensuring that every child and young person could learn, develop and reach their full potential.

UNICEF Youth Board members Bandile Mnisi and Thando Dlamini joined young people from across the country at the LCOY Eswatini 2026 convened at Matsapha Municipality, Manzini Region.
The meeting created a space for young people to discuss climate change, share their perspectives and contribute to the development of the National Youth Climate Statement.
Their participation is a powerful reminder that young people are not just future leaders, they are climate leaders today. By bringing their voices, ideas and experiences to the table, Bandile and Thando help ensure that young people are meaningfully represented in the conversations and decisions shaping Eswatini’s climate future.
Young people have a voice. Young people have solutions. Young people are leading change.

Right now, Health Promotion Eswatini and UNICEF are on the ground at Lomahasha, KaMfundza, engaging the community on Ebola Disease , its signs, symptoms, and how we can all stay protected.

Know the Signs & Symptoms:
Sudden fever, fatigue, and body weakness
Muscle pain and headache
Sore throat
Vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain
Unexplained bleeding or bruising
Prevention is in Our Hands:
Wash hands frequently with soap and clean water
Avoid contact with blood and body fluids of sick persons
Avoid handling items that may have come into contact with an infected person
Do not touch the body of someone who has died from a suspected Ebola infection , report to health authorities immediately
Seek medical care immediately if you notice any of these symptoms : early detection saves lives!

Did you know children face different risks than adults when disaster strikes?
Today in Mbabane, UNICEF Eswatini joined the National Disaster Risk Management Authority and partners to validate an exciting update to Eswatini's INFORM Risk Model , a tool that shows, Inkhundla by Inkhundla, where risk is highest across the country.
Here's what makes this update special: for the first time, the model puts children at the centre. It now looks at things that matter most for their safety and wellbeing , clean water and sanitation, access to education, child protection, and the health of children under five. It even factors in heatwaves, air pollution, malaria and wildfire risks.
Why does this matter? Almost every child in the world is now exposed to at least one climate-related hazard and over a billion face three or more at once. Knowing exactly where children are most at risk means government, communities and partners can plan better: from building stronger clinics and schools, to targeting social protection, to preparing for emergencies before they happen.
A special shout-out to the young voices from the Climate Change Youth Parliament who joined today's workshop, because these are the risks they will carry into the future, so their voices belong in the room.
This isn't just data for data's sake, it's a living, open tool that any ministry or partner can use and keep refreshing as new information comes in.
Together, we're building a safer, smarter Eswatini, one that plans for its children first.
